Filipino food is not a diet friendly.....

I'm filipino and maried an american.... Most of the time I don't cook filipino food because it has so much sodium or high calories.... I would cook it maybe once or twice a month.... Last night my husband asked me to cook some filipino food. So, I made Pork Adobo (pork picnic, garlic, onion, vinegar, black pepper, MSG and SOY SAUCE) and eat it with rice (205cals/cup and lucky if I would only eat one cup per meal). That was fine because we haven't had it for a while.... But then i also had adobo again for lunch today... To make it worst, my mom called me that she made some Kambing (goat) soup which I haven't had for really long time.... To make it worst, i went to my parents house and eat again not even 3 hours after I had my lunch.... :(

within 24 hrs, i consumed almost 2,000 cals :explode: .... my goal is 1,400.... :(

What am i suppose to do when this kind of situation comes up again?

    I know what you're talking about! I'm half Filipino (on my father's side,) so every big event, I'm tempted by homemade chicharon, adobo, lumpia, pancit... none of which fits into my calorie budget!

    The best advice I have is portion control... like you can eat adobo as a side dish instead of as a main entree... instead of with rice, eat it with veggies. Same thing with the soup. Just have a little cup with a healthier main dish.

    But for those special occassions, just plan your day so you can afford to eat those high calorie foods. Just eat cereal or fruit for breakfast/lunch, get a good work out in, and treat yourself (within reason) for dinner.

    Full Filipino here and I eat Filipino food often! Chicharone is even in there once a week! Just like any other foods, if you stick to your calorie limits, you will lose weight. May have to take in a little more potassium and water, but it can be done. I've done it for over 40 years.

    I'm a halfy here as well! Im lucky tho, my mom doesn't cook that much so we just eat Filipino food at parties or holidays. Even on those days, I sorta watch my portions. That's the most advice I can give you! Portion control! And if there's leftovers, portion out that so you can have it for the whole week, just reall small meals tho.

    Mmmmm I love me some chicken adobo. I'm not Filipino, but was born there (dad was in the Navy), so my parents learned a lot about Filipino food. My mom makes some yummy lumpia.

    Tell me about it...I got to the point where my family doesn't bother asking me to eat rice and adobo because I'm just going to say "NO!!" lol.

    But sometimes it's unavoidable because you go to someone's house and their family says "letts gooo eeeattt," Now on the other hand my girlfriend is Vietnamese and their food is pretty healthy compared to our food :sad:

    YES, DISHES FROM THE PHILIPPINES CAN BE "DIET FRIENDLY.” A lot of our one-pot dishes have loads of vegetables. We just need to use LEAN, SKINLESS MEAT and LOWER SODIUM CONDIMENTS.

    Congratulations on your weight loss. You look great! I'm 2 weeks old in MFP, a PIlipino mother of 3, and living in Chicago Illinois.

    Anything can be diet friendly as long as you stick to your calorie allotment.

    If you went over by 600 calories, exercise and burn 600 calories.

    It's easier when you don't overcomplicate it. I promise. :flowerforyou:

    Mabuhay! Being Flip myself let me tell you it's VERY possible to still enjoy Filipino food and stay lean. Key is portion control and making sure that you're getting in a good amount of exercise and water. Since I do almost all the cooking at home, and frequent family parties each weekend, Filipino food is almost a daily meal. Some keys I do:

    I don't eat a lot of rice. I don't put more than a cup of any food on a plate at one sitting. I bust my *kitten* exercising daily. I drink half my weight in ounces of water to help reduce water retention.
