Do I burn calories without increasing heart rate?

I can't find the answer on google, but I'm wondering, do I burn calories even when my heart doesn't speed up? Lije, some days I take a 10 mile walk but the whole time by heart doesnt really go faster since I'm on level ground and walking maybe 3 MPH.

Do things like that still burn significant calories?

Thank you

  • Yes because your muscles burn energy not just your heart.

You burn calories just being alive. Calories are the "gasoline" that makes your motor run. And since your motor is always runnin', you're always burning calories.

More specific to your question... yes, you burn calories walking. I'm skeptical about your heart rate not increasing though. It should, if not just slightly.

Sort of said already, so I’ll just reiterate. You burn calories at all times, all day long. Primarily measured in BMR, your body expends energy a.k.a burns calories just to survive. That said, yes you are burning calories while you walk. Your question asks if “significant” calories are burned and that will all depend on your current lifestyle. Your heart rate is probably increasing but at a rate at which you are not able to “feel” it necessarily. I think the averages in mfp are pretty accurate but an HRM can help. Regardless of if your heart rate goes up a lot or little, you should be burning additional calories than if you were at rest.
