A smoker, crabbing about smokers.

Ok so I am a smoker. Like it or not, I am. But I am a POLITE smoker. I don't smoke around people, almost ever, because you never know who doesn't like it, who might be allergic, etc. I don't SMELL like a smoker, or try really hard not to. I wash my hands and use a light body spray after my breaks. I don't smoke at work, except on lunch and bank breaks. I NEVER leave butts anywhere but in the places designated for them...
That being said, we have a new truck driver at work. My particular office has FOUR basic employees; me, my dad (nonsmoker), my uncle (nonsmoker) and the new guy (smoker). When the new guy started here I told my uncle that I would not be accused of smoking in the yard due to cigarette butts etc. that are left there and he just chuckled and said "I don't think it's gonna be that big of an issue with him" and I let it go. Even tho every morning I pull in and he is chain smoking in his car in the parking lot, comes in and STINKS like an old ashtray, has to ask to go have a smoke before and after EVERY job that needs to be done. UNTIL TODAY... My dad got back from a job and came into my office. "What kind of cigarettes do you smoke?" he asked. I said, "I know where this is going, and NO they are not mine." Dad laughed (not a happy laugh) and said "They are **** **** menthol, isn't that what YOU smoke?" and I told him that the new guy must smoke the same ones and that he should be cleaning them up. I added that in FIVE years of working here, I have never left a butt in the yard. Not one. He agreed and proceded to say that he would have to have a talk with his brother (that would result in a whole lot of crap for this guy and he is really good at his job and nice to get along with aside from the smoking issue)
After that I went outside (with rubber gloves in the rain) and counted SIXTY butts that I picked up and put in a bag. That is THREE packs worth of the darn things, strewn all over the front parking area of our office building! I just did this not too long ago. Yes, I could have left them there and let new guy get into trouble but that is just not who I am. Apparently he and I need to have a chat (after all, I'm the one picking them up and a WHOLE lot nicer about things when I need to confront people on issues)... I just don't understand how people can be so rude and inconsiderate. I don't care if it is cigarette butts, soda cans, McD's trash... if it is litter, PICK IT UP. Is that really too much to ask?
I feel a lot better now:blushing:

im the same way that you are. i try not to bug others with my smoking. i try to be considerate.0 -
I just feel that it is smokers like this guy that give all of us a bad rap.... Like those people that smoke with the windows up and a car full of kids:grumble: I mean, really???0
-
I used to smoke and I know exactly what you mean. Is there a butt can that he can put them in? Not that he necessarily would. Where I work there is a butt can but some how there are more butts outside of the freakin can than inside of it. Especially at a place of business!!! That's SOO unprofessional and doesn't send a good message to clients. People kill me!0
-
Exactly kit!0

I'd have a chat with him and inform him that it's very unprofessional to leave butts strewn about outside your place of business and that you would really appreciate it if he could either throw them away or dispose of them in a designated can/ bucket. I think the issue can be solved by suggesting that and then if he's still not complying, it's time to get a little more crass. Your dad should also know you better than to assume you'd litter so blatantly, especially after five freaking years.0

Thanks! I haven't gotten a chance to talk to him yet... but I will try to get to him before the others do Yeah, with more respect than I should have, I let my dad know that he was being a bit jerkish0
-
Did you get a chance to talk to him? I'm all nosy over here haha.0
-
Well? Inquiring minds (ok nosey minds) want to know dang it!0
-
YES! ha ha last night actually  I held up a coffee can and said "Rick, do you know what this is?" and he goes, "Ummm coffee?" and I said "Nope, it's called the "Amber isn't going to get blamed ever again can" and you need to use it please" LOL he was really good about it... the only thing that I wasn't thrilled with was when he added "So, WE cannot leave the butts in the yard anymore huh?":grumble: yeah...buddy. WE can't.0
-
Hahahahahahaha "we". Nice try home. Good for you though for laying down the law! Now I'd he still leaves butts after this, I'll come there myself. :devil:0
