Strong believer in the importance of diet AND exercise

I just wanted to know if anybody has actually lost a significant amount of weight with either JUST good diet, or JUST exercise, not both together.

I feel as though people say they can lose weight eating whatever they want, but burning it off lets them do that. I am really not convinced that anyone can eat like s***, but still lose weight...

Comments?

I get in my essentials (macros, minerals, vitamins) and then eat whatever else I want and stay in deficit and lose weight. Yesterday I ate a Double Quarter pounder with cheese for lunch and was a pound lighter this morning. Not uncommon with me though.

I eat what I like BUT my aim is to have it fit my macros and calories, therefore, if my aim was to lose weight, as long as I had a deficit I would lose, and my macros are the way they are so that I have a balanced diet, and get enough protein etc for my lifting at the gym.

If I ate precisely "everything" that I wanted, I would be:
    a) usually over my calorie goal
    b) always over on carbs, and sodium (major water weight!!) and never get enough protein.

This means that if I wanted a big mac every day I could do so, but I'd have to be extra careful on the sodium for the rest of the day.

ETA: I am very much for, losing weight through diet "and" exercise though for maximum health, there are benefits to both and I do not think it best to just rely on just one.

I lost 20 pounds (from 170-150) with just small dietary changes - cut WAY back on soda and candy (still have both occasionally, but not every day like I used to), stopped using a stick of butter in everything that I cooked, and started working on reasonable portions. The only 'exercise' I did was a lot of walking, mostly job related.

That being said, I recently joined a gym and have been exercising at least twice a week for the past month. I intend to bump that up to at least three times a week by January, if not sooner. Now that I have the dietary stuff mostly under control, I need to get active so I can get rid of the flab. I've lost nearly 5 more pounds with exercise and plan to lose 5-10 more, though I no longer have a scale goal I have a mirror goal.
