i've been reading (and seeing pics) of the awesome results people here have gotten w/ 30DS and PBX, etc,. i do go to P/T 3 x week and to gym usually 5 x week (even though there are certain things i cannot physically do there, i do what i can and go all out) however winter is upon us and well..since my accident had ice involved i seriously prefer NOT to leave house while i still have a leg in pieces if it is slippery out. (geez nice run on sentence there, sorry it is very late). i would like to purchase a home workout video for those times but it has to meet these conditions:
1- low impact. i still have walking cast on one leg and still have fractures in bones that are mending. but NOT low sweating, i wanna push myself, kwim?
2- doesn't involve buying much if any equipment -i'm obviously unable to work right now and living on what disability gives you ...well let's just say i'm keeping an eye out for a nice cardboard box to move into soon.
or does anyone have a better idea than a video for someone like me for those days i don't want to venture out through an ice storm to the gym? yeah it would be awesome to have all those machines at gym in my apt but unless i win lottery that's not gonna happen. like i do have stairs inside - should i just "run" (yeah right) up and down them for an hour? actually that would hurt leg waaaaay too much, maybe crawl up and down them instead? ack.
somebody, anybody, have a good idea for me? last winter i was in a wheelchair and did nothing but feel sorry for myself and eat- this winter has to be the polar (haha) opposite for me! help.....?

Hello and welcome!!! This is an awesome site. I am also disabled and cannot do much exercise either. I have a dvd called Walk Away the Pounds with Leslie Sansone. It is a 4 mile walk but you can stop at any point along the way and it can also be modified to whatever you need to work with your limitations. I also go to Curves for Women who has things I can do (after having 3 back surgeries). I would love to motivate, support and encourage you on this journey that we are all on. Please feel free to check out my profle and add me if you would like.
Hugs

thanks bev. sure add me!
unfortunately walking (anything full weight -bearing) is like the hardest thing for me right now (plus w/ the whole snow/ice thing happening outside, eeek). like when i go to gym i can do an hour or two on bikes easily (hey i have more than a year's worth of pent up energy to get rid of, lol) and 30 minutes on rowing machine set at hardest setting (now that will make ya sweat! love it!) and strength training for core and arms, etc on machines but cannot do things like a treadmill or elliptic for more than 2 minutes tops before severe pain (like the bad kind ya know not to ignore and push through) starts. and my p/t doesn't want me to touch leg strengthening machines at gym - i do those at p/t under professional supervision.
sigh, it is really hard to think of anything i can do at home that can work for me. ::frown: get bummed reading all the 30DS, and the like, threads here and how wonderfully they work. i hate winter.0 -
Would you feel up to working up a sweat through doing more strength-type exercises for your upper body and core? You could get just a couple resistance bands (I got one recently for like $5 at Marshall's) and use those, and do body weight exercises like push-ups, etc. It'll be tough but not take up too much space or put too much stress on your legs.0

i would totally feel up to working up a sweat any way possible at home that doesn't require one leg to be involved much. is there DVD's that come w/ bands? cause i need something to keep me focused at home. at gym it is so easy to keep up the pace...at home not so much w/o help from some outside force. push-ups i'm gonna see if possible to do w/ cast on- it's hard when ankle/foot are immobilized to go simple things like that, kwim? maybe i can do them on knees...just not very graceful getting down or up from floor, lol.
maybe this will make it easier: can anyone think of a home program/video/etc. they do that they could still work through if one leg from knee down was MIA(aka not involved in)?.0 -
I was in an accident and ruptured both achilles tendons... not broken bones, but similar situation in that I had repairs, was cast on both legs for several months, and had to do a lot of PT just to walk again. My ortho and PT allowed me to start low impact exercise, with limitations not to jump, walk with any incline, run, or put my foot in a position that would strain my tendon.
I'm not sure what exact limitations your physician has for you, but for myself, I found the following fit the bill:
1) Rowing machine (I bought one but you can rent for $40/mo.) Maybe an elliptical or recumbent bike might also work for you?
2) Kettlebells - strength & cardio in one. You can find workouts online and modify moves to fit (for example, I can't do lunges, so I substitute another move.
3) Walking - I can do a treadmill at low speed and no incline. Again, you might want to check into renting if a treadmill works for you.
Also, depending on where you live, Craigslist is a great source for used exercise equipment, cheap!
For videos, I'd search youtube for seated kettlebell workouts, chairobic or SMART (Seated Movement Aerobic & Resistive Training). There are a lot of cardio workouts that can be done seated.
Hope that helps! Good luck with your recovery!0 -
thank you epona_mus! the treadmill i can't do yet (still have fractures under that cast) but what you had is very similar- like lunges are sooo outta the question, but the rowing machine is what i love more than anything else, it is perfect for someone like me. maybe i can get one super super cheap on craig's list or maybe someone there is even giving one away. stationary bikes work too since they are non-weight-bearing. too bad yard sale season is over- there was always a lot of stationary bikes at yard sales if i remember correctly. i never thought about looking on craig's list, ~ great idea!
i never heard of SMART or chairobic - will be giving that a good google session in morning.
maybe i can find weights or kettlebells on craig's list too......0 -
I don't know why I didn't immediately think of this earlier -- I feel so stupid now but there are many DVDs aimed specifically for people in your situation! Google "seated aerobics" or "chair aerobics." Gin Miller has some seated workouts focusing on both cardio and strength, or check out chairdancing.com. There are a bunch of trailers for different DVDs on YouTube and on CollageVideo.com. Good luck
But as far as the bands, the bands I bought were Cathe Miller brand and they even came with a DVD showing you how to use them for different exercises.0 -
I found you can rent a waterrower from waterrower.com for about $40/mo. If you have a local shop that rents fitness equipment, they may have the CB2 or other model for rent as well. I love rowing!!
In my area, we have a shop called "Play it Again Sports" (they have stores in the US and parts of Canada) where you can buy used equipment and some new stuff... I get my hand weights and kettlebells there... 3-5 lb handweights and a 4 kg kettlebell will set you back about $40 total there. You might want to check their website and see if there is one nearby:
http://www.playitagainsports.com/alllocations.aspx
SPRI.com sells weights/bells for pretty cheap too, but I'm not sure what their shipping fees are like.
Stationary bikes are always on our Craigslist... hopefully you can find one that is being used as someone's clothes hanger and give it a good and useful home!! :-)
Good luck. If it helps at all, I could barely walk across the room just a few months ago. Since I was given the green light to exercise, I've lost 9 lb and have ~90% reduction in pain. I hope you find similar healing...0 -
Hey there
Richard Simmons has several DVD's for exercise. He has low impact aerobics, sitting exercise...all kinds. check out his website
