Or you can go to a fitness store and pick up body fat calipers for $10 and learn how to use them. I have my wife help me all the time. I measure a spot until I can get 3 consistant ratings back to back. I know it can lead to some inaccuracy, but has also proven very important in calculating my calories.

I could do that. maybe once i get this reading and see where i am at to begin with, i will look into that.

wanted to let you know i got BF% tested on the bod pod and it was 2% higher than those online calculators. So they seem to be inaccurate... just fyi. never had a dexa scan, i imagine it would be more accurate.

A 2% difference is actually really good. The calculators are not going to be perfect since they can't take every single variable into account, so I'd say 2% is awesome. I'm using 2 different calculators to monitor my progress and they come out about 8% different from each other as far as the total BF number is concerned, but both show progress in the same direction and of a very very similar rate (me losing fat and gaining a very small amount of lean mass), and the progress part is more important than the actual completely accurate number, I think. For me anyway. :-)

A dexa scan will give you a body fat percentage that includes the fat in your brain, bones, an organs. That's why a dexa scan body fat percentage will be higher than a bodpod's, dunk test's, body fat scale's and Omron handheld body fat monitor's body fat percentage. I wouldn't pay to have a dexa scan done to get my body fat percentage. I'm not aiming to lose fat in my brain, bones or organs. I'm aiming to lose the fat that's under my skin. I trust my body fat scale and handheld monitor. They give me the same body fat reading that shows how much fat that I have under my skin.

Or is the scale just a piece of s**t?

I would go with that option. I've heard that scales aren't very accurate since it can change a great deal with how hydrated you are.

Have you been taking measurements? Body fat estimates based on measurements aren't totally accurate either, but a lot of people seem to like this one: http://www.scientificpsychic.com/fitness/diet.html Plug in your starting weight and measurements, and your current weight and measurements.

That website is pretty cool. :) Thanks for the link. I put my information into it and am pleased with what I see. :)

I trust my devices. If you can, get your body fat percentage checked on a body fat scale or Omron handheld body fat monitor and compare the results to your bodpod results. If both or either gives you the same reading, would you believe them?

I prefer body measurement methods for body fat calculation
    See this site
    http://www.scientificpsychic.com/fitness/diet.html

I use a body fat with my weight scale, and it's right on the money, but I still would validate your results with this simple measurement tool.

Bump. I want to read this but can't at the moment as I'm working, but I definitely want to see the responses to this. I'll check back later and read what everyone has written. :)

Not to sidetrack this topic, but I just used your calculator and it was a perfect example of why people need to NOT focus on BMI.
The site told me my BMI made me obese, but the bodyfat % told me I was 10.6% (Professionally tested with multiple methods in the last week and I am 10%, so pretty damn close!)

Just another reminder how ridiculous BMI is

I bought a super expensive Withings scale, and I kick myself all the time. I've lost 16 pounds, and that scale STILL tells me that my BF% is 33.5 - 34.6%.
I'm 5'8, and now weigh 153. I strength train, and work out often. With the link shown earlier, it tells me my BF% is 27.9%.
I'm sure I probably was 33% when I started, but the scale never changes.

Don't trust the scale for your BF!

yes but they haven't measured up, at least not for me anyway. i've used various scales and monitors and none are the same reading all are way way off from each other. so i don't and can't trust them. i'd rather have a professional measure it for me using a device that has been proven to be accurate, and then let me know. scales just do a fast scan through your body the quickest path it can and give you a fast reading. this is not an accurate way to measure. that is what fitness experts have told me. so i choose to believe their advice and not trust scales that claim to measure bf.

All scales will not give you the same scale weight. Trust the body fat percentage method you think is right for your body. Keep up the good work.

You SHOULD actually be worrying about the fat in your liver (and hiding in pockets in your abdominal cavity) as much, if not more, than the fat under your skin. The liver and abdominal fat is what causes so much of the obesity-related organ damage over time. Darn near impossible to estimate the amount of that fat in your body, though.

The same way you get rid of any fat- eat a calorie deficit and exercise.

You can't specifically target the fat in your liver or anywhere else.

I don't diet. Thanks. I have my eyes on the fat that's under my skin. I will never know if fat has been lost in my liver, because I will never get a dexa scan to find out my body fat percentage.

Yeah... I know... you tell people every chance you get that you 'don't diet'.

And you've also said you're never getting a dexa scan a number of times too. We understand.

So what was the point of asking your question? DId you actually want to know or were you trying to set up another opportunity for you to tell us again what you've already told us?

You can determine whether you've got fat on your liver with an ultra-sound and an MRI- that's actually one of the things that triggered my "oh ****, I really really need to lose weight" moment that got me working on successful weight loss. I have a fatty liver. It's not causing problems yet, but it will if I don't bring my weight under control.

The easiest way to lose fat anywhere, including the liver is to keep a calorie deficit and exercise. That's the answer. Simple as that. If you're not dieting, you're probably not going to lose fat on your liver.

I can ask a question. I don't look to trap anyone. I'm not that kind of person. I don' t have to get an ultra-sound or MRI or dexa scan to see that I need to lose fat. The fat that I care about is the one that's under my skin. The ones that I see its shape and squeeze. When I reach my body fat percentage goal, I will still have fat in my liver, brain, bones, etc.

If a person wants to know about all the fat in their body, they should seek that information. I'm going to stick with my devices that I trust. They are working for me.
