Sugar intake

OK, question on types and amounts of sugar intake. I'm a bit of a sugar addict, and enjoy my M&Ms, chocolate, etc (although curbing my portions significantly since starting to track with MPF...just one more benefit to this awesome service). I've also been trying to eat at least one piece of fruit a day, generally pretty tame fruits, though - apples, oranges, pears, kiwis, etc. Pears are probably my favorite, so I was completely dismayed to discover that a medium Bartlett pear has about 17g of sugar in it!! When my recommended total is about 55g, this really impacts my daily intake, especially if I reward myself with a piece of chocolate.
My question is - am I hurting my weight loss goals when I regularly exceed the recommended daily sugar intake, even when the majority of sugar intake comes from "healthy" sugars such as from raw fruit?
