Question about lifting.

Hi all -

I have been wondering about this and I figured I would get some opinions. My goals are to lose fat and replace it with muscle - I wouldn't mind if I lost some weight but that's not the major goal.

Would I have to go to the gym and start lifting weights to do this?

I know this seems like a stupid question, but hear me out - I have PT 3x a week with the ROTC cadets (which consists of a 3-4 mile run and then all sorts of exercises only using your own bodyweight (pushups, situps, pullups, dips, crunches, etc etc) mon and weds, then a long run on fridays), and I asked for the Insanity DVD for christmas, so soon I'll be doing that as well. I'd like to run on my own atleast once or twice a week too... so it seems pretty impractical to go to the gym along with doing all this...

Thoughts?

  • Heyy!! Im in ROTC too :D

All the cardio we do makes it hard to actually put on mass. A lot of the workouts work more on muscle endurance too.
In order to gain muscle you have to eat in a surplus, and to lose fat a deficit. So replacing fat with muscle is going to be nearly impossible. I would still go to a gym and use weights. IMO is is tough to beat that :]

Yeah, that would be way too much. I used to waste time trying to do a bit of everything, because I wasn't quite sure what I wanted.

You need to first decide exactly what it is that you want, and then work toward that goal in the most efficient way possible. Keep the stuff that isn't getting you toward that goal to a minimum.
