I've been thinking of that. Should be interesting to say the least!
  • I joined last January! Best decision ever! And I actually stuck with it. This will be the first year that my new year's resloution WON'T be to lose weight. (cause I'm already doing it)!

Argh, I totally forgot about January gym joiners. My gym isn't crowded during the times I am able to go, but it's totally packed when everyone comes home from work around 3 or 4 in the afternoon...I wonder how much more packed it will get in January.

I'm already pissy with my gym because they've started offering group classes despite not really having the space to do so. These classes take up the entire mat/stretching/balance ball area and are just generally in the way.

I can only imagine how high my blood pressure will go next month when I've got to work around the classes and the JJs.

Exactly! We were all joiners at one point and made our gyms and MFP a little more crowed. Good for them for joining and may they all stick with it this year.

Exactly. We ALL had a start date for joining a gym or getting in shape or signing up on here, but I'm glad no one put "dibs" in on when I would give up and walk away.... instead, I am glad that I found a GREAT, encouraging group of friends who help motivate me and vice versa.

January joiner by definition quits. These are the people who come for 2 - 3 weeks and never come back untold the next January. Yes, I know that we were all new at some point, bit these are also people who aren't really serious and just in my way because they think going to the gym and standing around is a workout.

My gym is alot pricier than the other gyms in town so I'm thinking it will be ok.

i get that there are probably going to be some ppl who come on and don't last - but wow, i'm suddenly glad i joined in an odd month. how about encouraging them and helping them keep at it? maybe ppl are joining the gym in January b/c that's when there are joiner fee specials. smile and nod and keep on your way.

i bet that statistically, there are no more quitters in January than there are other times, percentage-wise.

I'm not too worried about it. These people usually don't lift free weights or work out until the gym closes at 10pm.

The weight room was already packed with people getting an early lead yesterday morning. I figure it this way, everyone should get started at some point, what motivates each of us is different. If that turn of the year is what motivates someone, who am I to judge, I just hope they stick with it. Then again, when I'm not doing my own workouts I'm a group fit instructor and in my classes the more the merrier. I do refer to the people who start around this time of year, "resolutionaries" though. It's my own made up word, but it makes me chuckle just the same. I have some great regulars who started out as resolutionaries and decided to make it stick.

You are all better people than me. I get really annoyed when people aren't serious and in my way. It seems like everyone here is dedicated to make the change. You wouldn't be the people I'm talking about. This time of year is frustrating. The positive thing is that the membership fees collected from people who don't come are subsidizing my fees so I guess its a goos thing for me.

I think the stat is that 15% of new years resolutions like this are adhered to for a permanent change, that may actually be high. I wish it were more, everyone has a right to feel and look good, not everyone has the support system or dedication. You never know which one of those things a person is lacking unless you are the person trying to be the support system. I'd rather they fail for lack of dedicaiton, lack of support system is just sad.

3 Years ago I was NYRer, although I didn't join MFP till August. Everyone has to start some where.

More people means more of all kinds of people. More people that will turn their lives around, and more people that will be in our way for 45 days.

If you have the fortitude to change your life Januray Joiners shouldn't bother you all that much.
