The Value of a Smile at Christmas

It costs nothing, but creates much.
It enriches those who receive, without impoverishing those who give.
It happens in a flash and the memory of it sometimes lasts forever.
None are so rich they can get along without it, and none are so poor but are richer for its benefits.
It creates happiness in the home, fosters good will in a business, and is the countersign of friends.
It is rest to the weary, daylight to the discouraged, sunshine to the sad, and Nature's best antidote for trouble.
Yet it cannot be bought, begged, borrowed, or stolen, for it is something that is no earthly good to anybody till it is given away.
And if in the last minute rush of Christmas buying some of our salespeople should be too tired to give you a smile, may we ask you to leave one of yours?
For nobody needs a smile so much as those who have none left to give!

I watched a documentary recently called "The Bridge". It's about people who jump off the Golden Gate Bridge to commit suicide. When investigators found one gentleman's body, they went to his apartment to see if he had left a suicide note. He had. It was very simple: "I'm taking a walk down to the bridge today. If just one person smiles at me on the way there, I won't jump." This affected me so profoundly. This man had to walk through the city of San Francisco to get to the bridge, so you know he must have passed a lot of people on the way there. It is a populous city. Apparently, not one person smiled at him. What a difference it could have made if they had. :( Sure reminds me to smile when i'm walking around town each day.

OMG that's sooo sad, that walking through the whole SF he could not find a single person to give him a smile .
This story remind me of this : "Today, give a stranger one of your smiles. It might be the only sunshine he sees all day." H.Jackson Brown, Jr.
