Bring your own snacks! Or buy healthier foods at the airport. I've never had a problem eating healthy at the airport and I travel quite a bit for work. Just don't give in to all the junk/fast food/candy, etc that's around you. You can always find fresh fruits, yogurts, nut/dried fruit mixes, etc. Oh and lot's of water.

My short answer: Be picky and bring some healthy snacks.

Fruit is good (if you're allowed to take it with you, don't bring it into Australia or you'll be fined!) and nuts, muesli bars, peanut butter sandwich all stand up OK to travelling.

Other than that, it is really going to depend on what airport you are in, some may have a salad bar or cafe with healthier options, but I wouldn't count on it. Otherwise, I would just be prepared to eat the best thing you can find, log it and don't stress if you are over your cals for a day or two.

You might find it helpful to know your maintenance calories - theoretically as long as you don't go higher than this you can still lose weight. It's reassuring to know then when the food you are eating is not entirely under your control.

If you do get food on the plane, be picky - give away the bread roll and chocolate (if you can bear to) and eat the main course.

Check to see if there is an "order ahead" option for meals - sometimes that means you can choose what you will eat (vegetarian, diabetic meal, low fat etc) or at least you might have better idea of what will be available for purchase.

    Enjoy your travelling!

    I travel a lot. A lot lot.

If the flight and wait time is short enough, I just fast. If it's long though, I bring my own food because airport food is overpriced, and airplane food is icky. I love peanut butter sandwiches, homemade protein bars, dried fruits, nuts and tofu jerky. I've never had an issue with bringing any of the aforementioned items in my carryon - just make sure you're not bringing in jars of anything (like peanut butter) or beverages.

It's awful, everything in the airport is about ripping you off. I used to get such bad sticker shock! Now I know better and I pre-plan - I like my snacks better than the food offered on the airline anyway :) In early January I'm taking a 14-hour flight home to New Jersey from Beijing (can't believe I've been here 5 months already!), and I am already planning my snacks!

I always pre-plan and bring snacks in both my checked luggage (if I'm going on a longer trip) and in my carry-on. Makes it a lot easier to make healthy choices. I used to use travel as an excuse to eat crap and binge, but no more.

I was traveling for a trade show recently and found the most amazing organic juice bar in the airport. I had a delicious smoothie and bought some fresh-made dried fruit/nut bars to go. Was a fabulous find.

That sounds delightful! Do you happen to remember what airport? I would be ecstatic if I wound up there - more room in my bags for souvenirs ;)

Düsseldorf in Germany, strangely enough. I'm always on the look-out for weird and interesting things at airports.

Bump! I'm traveling next week, on a transatlantic flight, and I could really use some tips. I get unusually hungry when traveling like that, because of boredom and fatigue (like not sleeping the night before).

I was definitely thinking of bringing nuts and dried fruits, and crackers. How about sandwiches made with good carbs?

This...I travel at least once a month. With water, though, you can't take the bottles through security so only bring as much as you're going to drink prior to going through security and then buy another bottle when you're through the machines.

drink plenty of water. I bring my own empty reusable water bottle so that I can fill it up from the drinking fountains while im in the airport/before I get on a light but after security to save me ffrom buying $3+ bottles of water.

and bring your own snacks like granola bars, dried fruit, nuts, trail mixes, cookies or crackers, even a bag of dry cereal (you can probably get milk on the plane if you ask for either free (as your beverage) or for a couple of dollars and have cereal. i'd highly suggest buying the individual bags of things or bringing the whle container of something rather than resizing in your own bags so that all the labels are there for security

I bought a Brita filtration bottle. I take the empty bottle with me through security and fill it at a water fountain. It saves me so much money when I traveling because I don't have to buy water at the airport and I can refill it at my hotel to use during my trip.

That sounds absolutely brutal! I would definitely see if you can pre-order the low calorie option on the flight and bring snacks with you. :flowerforyou:

Call and ask if you're allowed to bring nuts/peanut butter on the plane. It can be restricted because of the abundance of allergic people these days.
They should have healthy choices available. We bought a cheese plate on a flight we were on. :-)

FYI, you can bring an empty water bottle through security. I have one of those rubbermaid water bottles that filter water and I just empty it before I get to the airport, take it out of my bag, and go through security. Then I fill it up with water. One time I was traveling to Italy and I forgot to empty it before security and my husband was like "uhhh just drink it" haha.
