Did you classify yourselves as sedentary or lightly active? I have stalled out on my loss, and I'm wondering if this is the issue. I am standing for probably 1/3-1/2 of the school day, but that's it. I walk my kids to lunch downstairs, and retrieve them from lunch, stairs again. But my heart rate never increases so am I sedentary?

  • I put myself as sedetary, but honestly, I NEVER sit down except at lunch..I should change that to at least lightly active.

Do you have an HRM you could wear for 24 hours on a typical day? I found that according to my calories burned, I was lightly active instead of sedentary even though I have a "desk job" (not a teacher, so hope I'm not stepping on toes). It's only 200-300 calories difference, but I think it helped me.

no, I really want a HRM but my husband got me a new ipod for V'day instead. :grumble: what a jerk!

until I get one I am just best-guessing
  • as a high school teacher, i was DEFINITELY at least lightly active. in fact, i would put the next level up. i spent all day walking back and forth, gesturing (probably wildly, since i love history and english), writing on the board, running up and down the halls to the copier. i know it was exercise because when i began the job i was exhausted by the end of the day.

if you're worried that you're not "lightly active," then find ways to make your job more active. teaching has lots of opportunities for that.
