One question about swimming and one about shredding! :D

Ok first question! Can someone give me a rough figure of how many calories I may burn doing 45-50 minutes of swimming. It's a 33m pool and I do sets of 6, always breaststroke, stopping for about a minute in between 6s. The speed I'd say is probably moderate to slightly faster but my breathing rate increases after each 6 lengths. MFP is estimating my calorie loss at between 600-800 calories and I don't believe I'm burning that much. When I try typing in freestyle it gives me around 420 which is more reasonable, but I'm still not sure....so I wondered if anyone knowledgeble on here could tell me!

Also I'm going to attempt to do 30 day shred-got it in the post this morning and I'd like to start as soon as possible. However, I live in a shared house on the middle floor and I have the grumpiest housemates ever living underneath me, so jumping jacks etc are out of the question. What I wanted to know is is there anything I can substitute that doesn't involve jumping or banging about for cardio? I couldn't think of anything myself because you need to be moving around, getting your heart rate up but I don't know....?

Thanks!!!

i don't know anything about swimming...but a big factor into how much you will burn is based on your current weight so none of us would be able to answer that. Maybe you could borrow someone's underwater heart rate monitor, adjust it to your settings and then you would have an idea.

I do the 30 day shred and really enjoy it. When you do jumping jacks you should be light on your feet and landing softly on the ball of your foot and that wont make much noice.....maybe just need to practice them....good luck!

Calories burned for any activity vary based on weight, height, gender, age, physical fitness level, exertion and probably several other things, so I don't think anyone can give you anywhere close to a rough estimate based on the information you provided. I suggest investing in a heart rate monitor with a chest strap.

I can tell you that *I* burn about 400 calories in an hour of swimming laps.

With The Shred, I suppose you could get away with running in place if you can do that quietly.

I use a very thick rubber floor mat. It's 1/2 inch thick. I don't live in an apartment though. I do it bc we have old floors and it would sound like a horse running in my house if I didn't use the mats.

I can't do any of the jumping like they do on the video, I kind of jump from one foot to the other and still raise my arms up like a jumping jack. I'm on carpet, but I imagine it would make considerably less noise than a regular jumping jack. Using a mat is a good suggestion as well.

And I just want to add that when it comes to swimming, maintaining a high body temp is important as well. You mentioned you take short breaks which is good but try and mix it up a little. Although you burn more calories doing breaststroke, you can still up the ante by doing freestyle intervals. This will get your heart rate up big time. Also, try and use the kick board for a few laps, now that will tire you out.

As for the jumping situation, I had a similar issue when I did P90x and instead of the jumping, I would just do body squats or high knees (no jumping though) in place of the jumping. You should try and find a place to do the shred properly though, maybe a partner you can do it with at their place, because the jumping parts really really get your body going. Good luck.
