I've tried different exercise programs. I've tried closely monitoring my food. I can't seem to break through this 2 year long plateau! Any BTDTs with advice?

  • i lost 60 lbs and had a hard time with the last 40 for a couple years, which i hope makes me qualify even though my answer is overly simple.

i started running and the weight started coming off again. i think i read somewhere that the best exercise is the one that you will do regularly and for me that is running. also, running burns a lot of calories per minute which helped

Thanks for the reply! I have been a runner and actually ran a half marathon this yet. I didn't notice much in the weight loss department though. :frown:

First of all, Congratulations on your enormous accomplishment ( and to Trud too!) !!

My comment is simple too~ maybe you're "there"~ where you are meant to be~ where your body wants you to be.

I saw your pics and you look fantastic~ I wouldn't change a thing!

all I can say is WOW! You look amazing...don't look at it like a plateau, you have been maintaing your weight loss for 2 years! That is so great!

How tall are you and how much more do you want to lose? Maybe you are at your weight...

If not, try mixing it up...start a new exercise program, something that you haven't done yet, in addition to your running...

    Congratulations on your accomplishment!

Have you tried increasing your calories? Also, do me a favor use the bmr calculator and post your results. Every plateau i have broken and have helped break was due to not eating enough.

Hey Hon, I personally have only been here about 8 months, but nearly 3 of those I was stuck at the same point. I found out I was just eating slightly too few calories every day. I was regularly under my actual needs/goal by about 50-200 because I was making meals that were too low on cals! I focused on getting within 100 either direction of my goal (trying to make the weekly net as close as possible) and within the first 2 days of watching closely I lost 3lbs. Finally my weight loss is moving.

I now simply suggest double checking calorie goals and making sure you are as close as possible. Good luck Hon!

In the boat with ya. Im happy you posted this cause I didnt want to say anything. A year for me. Ive tried everything and anything as well. I even got so down with myself I had to go back on antidepressants. I actually became odsessed with everything I ate. so I decided to cool off for a little and Im going to start over by eating a little more. And do an excerise I will stay with. Baby steps. Almost like starting over again. I decided to start with just excerise for at 15 to 20 min everyday. As for food, Im so use to eating good for the most part . Thats why MFP had prepare us for to always make good decisions. And anyways I dont like most foods I use to eat. I also starting thinking my body just dont want to let go. But from what I read and read on forums here that it is possible. Im going to try to stick with weight training. I do enjoy it. More than cardio anyday for me. From now on Im not going to dwell on that scale anymore and just do what I need to. Good luck!

its my understanding its easier to lose when you are bigger, when you get more in a healthy BMI your body fights you more. You have to be a lot more focused and exercise a lot more. Without looking at your diary, your calorie goals and your exercise levels its hard to say. YOu do have to exercise AND diet at the same time. It might just be your wording but it appears from what you are saying you have tried both, but not necessarily at the same time for a consistent length of time.

my suggestion is spend time lurking on these boards, befriend other people who are clearly successful and watch and learn.

I agree, you look great! The last 10ish pounds are the hardest. Have you had your body fat tested? I'm to the point where I don't care much about the weight anymore as getting rid of the fat. So I have started lifting (HEAVY!) again, I did it at the beginning of last year and in the first 6 weeks I lost almost 4% body fat, and 2lbs. I slacked off during marathon training, so I am back at it hoping to go from 27% to 22%.

I'm also trying to watch my sugar intake (not counting fruit/veggies/unsweetened dairy) Every food I consume I try to keep it under 4g per serving.

Good luck! It can be done :)

This happened to me!! I had lost like 80-100 pounds and stayed there for a couple years at least, then I decided to become vegetarian, and at the same time I also started running. I think the combo of the 2 helped me lose another 20 pounds. Since you already run, that wont help, but maybe increase the intensity of workouts.
Also I think changing up the diet might help! I dont eat vegetarian any more, but that did seem to help me. I have been stuck at another plateau for 9+ months and still trying to break through it. The plan I am doing now is lifitng weights 3 days per week, running 3 days per week and eating 2100 cal per day. (5'8" 169 pounds). I am not losing weight with this, but I have increased my lean body mass and decreased fat %.
Another thing that helped me a year or so ago to lose about 5 pounds was to limit my grains to 1 per day and eat as clean as possible. organic, non-processed, high protein, limited dairy ....
    Good luck!!
