Not for just donating blood (that I am aware of)... but i believe you can get paid for donating plasma which is a much more drawn out process (done in a hospital or docs office, not a church blood drive).
  • In Florida, you can get paid to donate plasma and/or blood in some places, but in order for it to be used for human use (as opposed to studies), it has to be a free donation. They do, however, offer incentives like a free shirt or towel and a coupon for something.

There are some places that pay you for your whole blood and plasma, however there are more places where people donate without expectation of financial compensation.

For just donating blood, no, although every once in awhile some place will offer rewards to get people to come give donations (I recall an ice cream giveaway in my area a year or two ago). However, there are facilities that will pay you to donate plasma but that's a bit more complicated from what I hear...
  • Thanks guys Ive always wondered because we dont get paid to donate up here in Canada. I always thought it was weird that you would get paid so I thought Id ask.

Is that whole blood? Here in Australia, we're not allowed to donate whole blood more often than every 12 weeks.

The movies you're watching might be portraying people donating plasma but might not be spelling it out clearly. There is this stereotype that college students or poor people do it a lot since you get cash right then and can do it every so often, and I have seen that stereotype portrayed in movies/TV before.

    I've never gotten a dime and I have a special, in-demand type.
  • Speaking as someone who depends upon donated plasma to survive, I thank all donors, both paid plasma donors and unpaid blood donors. I need monthly infusions of the immunoglobulin derived from plasma to give me the antibodies I don't produce. So your donations are truly lifesaving!

And yes, the process of plasma donation as I understand it is more complicated and stringent than giving blood. In order to go into the immunoglobulin pool, a donor must donate twice, with their blood testing safe both times. The extra rigor is to insure a relatively virus-free product.

    Again - I thank you!
