What happened to happy holidays?

I was out grocery shopping today, and was surprised that every store I went to, the cashiers said "Merry Christmas"...assuming I share their set of beliefs.

Not that im intolerant to the beliefs of others, its just my religion celebrates a different holiday which is not Christmas.

Not sure when "Happy Holiday's" went out of fashion.

If it makes you feel any better more than likely the cashiers dont believe in the true meaning of Christmas anyways. Its just a greeting. Why take it personally? Just smile and say, happy holidays back and go your merry way.

If you are upset that people say merry christmas instead of happy holidays then maybe you should go to work over the christmas period and not take any time off. After all it is not part of your religion.

Christmas is a christian holiday. The holiday didn't come first then christians decided to use it to celebrate christmas.

Now ladies, he is entitled to his beliefs and his opinions just as much as we are. Not everyone is Christian. But I do find that more than not, alot of the other faiths take it personally when referring to Christmas, when really ITS JUST A GREETING! ITS NOT PERSONALLY MEANT TO INSULT THEM!

    Geez.

I think some people have gotten tired of the PC way. Don't mention your beliefs because it may offend someone. She's a Christian, so telling you Merry Christmas wasn't wrong...it's her belief. If you don't believe that, just tell her Happy Holidays, or Happy Chanukah (or Hanukkah), Merry Festivus or whatever you choose. If you are a Scrooge fan, then maybe "Go, and redeem some other promising young creature, but leave me to keep Christmas in my own way." :)

Btw, you are right in that there are many holidays other than Christmas this time of year. I don't celebrate the solstice other than in a purely astronomical fashion, but I would not be offended if someone wished me a Happy Yule.
  • As a Pagan I celebrate Yule..I don't care that certain other religions hijacked it for their own use as long as they keep it in LOVE and PEACE! I don't care if they say Merry Christmas..Happy Holidays Or All Hail Cheese...I reply with a smile and a cheerful "Same to you" It doesn't hurt me...and whats the point of making a big deal about it? If you are going to be passionate about something...there are a ton of other things to needing your energy!! xxx

I don't get what the big deal is? Then maybe that's because I'm in the UK and everyone says " happy Christmas" why should anyone be offended by that? My daughter even gave a Christmas card to her Muslim friend at school and as far as I know they weren't offended

Anyway I would really just stop worrying about such trivial things as there are worse things in the world than someone wishing you a happy Christmas

Muslims observe Ramadan, not much of a celebration, per se, since it's a fast from dawn to dusk for a month. But if I knew which holiday someone was celebrating, I have no problem wishing them a happy/merry whatever. I like a specific greeting over a generic happy holidays. Seems more caring. May as well just say "enjoy December!"

I'm Jewish and if someone wishes me Merry Christmas, I don't have a problem with it. After all, if the worst thing that can happen to me as a Jewish man is to have someone wish me a Merry Christmas, then we've come a LONG way in the last 70 years.

That being said, Christmas is not the only holiday that happens in the month of December, and it doesn't occur on the 10th of December. Happy Holidays is a more appropriate greeting to reference the entire season, particularly when it's two weeks away from Christmas. I don't mind being wished a Merry Christmas, but I hope that Christians then wouldn't mind being wished a Happy Hannukah or Asura. If you would have an issue with it, then maybe you need to reflect on your own tolerance.

Honestly.... I work retail, and the CUSTOMER negates the greeting, it is NOT us "cashiers" who don't believe in the season, it's the contradiction that the "holiday shopper" acts out... preaches about the cost of merchandise and the economy, AS THEY BREAK OUT THEIR CREDIT CARDS TO BUY IT ANYWAY...

AND I SAY MERRY CHRISTMAS BECAUSE IT IS WHAT I BELIEVE AND THAT IS OUR RIGHT AS AMERICANS TO HAVE THE FREEDOM OF CHOICE OF RELIGION!!

OH, and because people make it such a big deal that it's FUN to watch the surprise on people's faces when I say it!! :P

    MERRY CHRISTMAS MFP
  • I think people are walking around on eggs way too much already, I mean when does this offending business stop... If I believed Christmas was the birthday of Jesus Christ and someone just said' Happy Holidays... I might be offended...
  • Honestly, as stressed out as most retail workers are this time of year, you should just count it as a blessing that she said "Merry Christmas" instead of "Get the Hell Out!" or something even less clean... Seriously - she wished you happiness. Leave it at that. Don't get all nitpicky about whether or not she chose the perfect words to do so. The sentiment was positive and happy. Leave it at that. And as a Christian who knows that there are lots of other celebrations going on this time of year, I'd be thrilled to be wished a Happy Hannukah or Yule or whatever.

Part of it I think is finally ...finally the masses is rejecting our society's ultra PC'ness.... it's gotten overboard and people are consciously rebelling against the "PC" saying of happy holidays. People can say whatever they want to say and people can take it however they want. For whichever religion you follow, ..it's a time to be happy ... no reason to get all worked up over a greeting. Just Bethy said it perfect.

If a cashier be rude to a customer they need to be fired.
  • Christmas is celebrating Christs birth. If you dont celebrate it- dont say it, but dont be offended by those who do. They are saying it out of celebration and love not trying to slam or dis you. I have friends that say happy holidays and thats fine- I say merry Christmas. There are holidays that others celebrate and I dont and if they say a greeting to go along with that holiday I just smile and say hi back- thats their thoughts and life not mine. But also I will not apologize for what I believe, for it is part of who I am. I will try to be respectful of others but I will not compromise my faith in doing so. Just as what you wrote might offend some but you have the right to put it on here if you want. I cannot be politically correct when it comes to my beliefs for all I am trying to please is my God and I live by his love and through those convictions I must remain true, otherwise what kind of faith is it really?!?! I truely hope you find peace.

Er....... Yes it did? It was invented 300 years after the guy it's supposed to be about. It was invented to coincide with pagan celebrations.

You should be forced to work the holidays for clearly knowing nothing about it

I'm a Christian and I don't celebrate christmas. When someone tells me merry christmas, I tell them I don't celebrate christmas.

Why even bother telling them? I was raised in a Jewish household and am an atheist, but whenever someone has wished me a "Merry Christmas", I wish them the same.

I feel like "Merry Christmas" should be treated as the American "How are you?" No one actually cares how you are, and you're not supposed to answer truthfully, you just say "fine, thanks" and go on. Why be "that guy"?

I do work the holidays but that is besides the point.
The holiday season, wether stolen of the pagans or not, is used a christian holiday in modern western society. So although other religions also have celebrations around this time, in America, Australia, England etc, the holidays are known as the christmas holidays.
Christmas day - 25 Dec - is the public holiday (in Aus at least) not any of the other days!

That's just plain downward rude. Ever tell that to me and don't even expect a "Hello!" afterwards!

(and I'm an atheist so it's not like I feel religion-offended or something)

interesting. usually its people complaining about the "war on christmas" and how "happy holidays" is offensive.
i say to each their own. i celebrate christmas, and always have. not always so much the religious part of it, but it gets mentioned. im not really sure what i believe as far as religion anyway.
Personally, i dont see what the big deal is either way. if you get offended over a few words that are meant to wish you happiness then maybe you should really think about why. i think too many people get caught up in themselves anyway
