how is it that when you think you are eating healthy your not? I struggle with making the right choices at times, i figure I'm making a good decision but in the end it turns out i didn't :( eg) salad dressings.... i figure salads are healthy but then i find that i had more fat/ calories in it then a burger..... same with things like guacamole, i love it and figured it was a good choice b/c it has healthy fats in it but i was recently told it's high in calories, etc and to just have salsa... or nuts, i have been told again, it's the good fats/ oils but yet they are so high in calories...........what are some things you thought were healthy and then found out weren't? how can i make better choices?

The amount of calories in a food do not qualify whether the food is healthy. You have to look at the nutrients. If I'm still a bit hungry, but don't have very many calories left for the day, I go ahead and go over my allotment eating something healthy but high in calories as opposed to something lower in calories but empty in nutritional value.

There are actually a lot of very healthy things that are high in calories. :-)

As far as weightloss and using lower-calorie choices is concerned, it's a learning process. You can still have the healthy, high-calorie items but in moderation so they don't murder your calorie allotment for the day.

    Absolutely spot on there!

You need to weigh it all up. If you're starving, then eating 25gr of nuts at around 160 calories may not cut it for you mentally, but a massive plate of salad with 80gr of low fat ham and a balsamic vinegar dressing, may well do the trick. It's all about learning which healthy foods work for you in filling you up.
  • And by the way, STAY AWAY from any salad dressing other than one you've made at home. I've seen 80 calorie salads turned into 400 calorie salads due to the amount of mayo on them. Now why that particular store doesn't do a low fat option which would take those 400 down to around 120 is beyond me.

When I have plenty of excess calories I'll mix 10ml olive oil with 15ml balsamic vinegar, 5ml of lemon juice, some black pepper, mixed herbs and half a teasponn of wholegrain mustard. With the olive oil that comes in at around 115 calories, so if my calories won't permit that, then I just cut out the olive oil and take it down to around 35.

We make all of our dressings at home..and by we, I mean my husband...super easy though. My favorite of his is a citrus dijon . He squeezes half an orange with a tbsp of dijon mustard adds some freshly diced or ground herbs and a then beats in a some amount of evoo.

The theme you will notice with all of those websites. They don't advocate just eating salads for the rest of your life...its about finding or tweaking recipes to make them healthful and yummy. :)

Log what you're about to eat before you eat it, that way you don't end up with any surprises!
