My backyard abuts to private land and about 150 yards away is a small lake. There are wild ducks and coyotes and assorted critters, mostly of a freindly nature.
I started feeding birds in a hanging feeder and as they are a bit messy in their eating habits, seed falls on the ground. The ducks have discovered this and have started coming into the edge of the yard to look for food. So, .....I started feeding them as well.
A year or so has passed and many of the ducks stay here year round. Now, when I walk to the edge of the yard with my bucket of seed, the older ones let me approach them and wait for the MAN WITH FOOD. However, the younger ducks have not yet learned that no harm is near and fly a bit away but not too far.
Then, the scare over, the younger ones waddle back up and join their older friends to eat.
For some reason, it reminds me of this place. The "new" people don't want to change or don't understand about eating their exercise calories. If they trust the "older" ones here, they stay and learn it is safe and begin to eat as well.
I enjoy feeding the ducks. Life is good.

Very cute way of thinking of things!!! You should attatch this to your blog!!!:drinker:0

Good point, I enjoy eating ducks as well as feeding ducks. I live near a large waterfowl sanctuary as we are right in the fly zone, or migratory path. Ducks are amazing critters, my favorite waterfowl. Do you know what kind of ducks you are feeding by chance?0
-
I also enjoy feeding my ducks but that is because if I don't they make the most God-awful racket starting at 7 in the morning. They were so cute when they were babies last spring, now they are pains-in-my-butt ducks, but they are still MY ducks. We have six of them and they are not wild, but our pets. When we were in the feed store last year picking up some more baby chicks, they were in there and we just had to bring some home. My dd wanted them so badly.
Anyway I am rambling and I also like your comparision.0 -
He enjoys feeding them... Are you planning on making it a "visit" or a hunting trip? Don't answer, Dave!!!:laugh:0

mallards...and no offense but the thought of harming one of them makes me ill....no offense I just do not understand hunting

It's an age old responsibility that many dont understand. Long story short though, if it weren't for hunting there would be more disease in wild animals and terrible overpopulation. Hunting is in the name of conservation (at least for honorable hunters it is). We get alot of Mallards around my parts too, they're tasty!0

ya...the disease and overpopulation argument is a common one and I always say the same response....if they are overpopulated and hungry, then feed them, if they are diseased (rare I am told) then treat them....I dont think killing animals for sport is a responsibility and it isn't done in the name of conservation....some guys feel bigger by killing...so I say this...if you want to hunt and kill...strip down to your underwear...chase that buck down and kill it with your bare hands....hiding in a tree blind or a duck blind is not a fair fight...if you must kill, then be fair? NOW...I have strong feelings on this and most of my friends call me the bleeding heart liberal and they hunt and we just agree to disagree...can we do that as well?
I dont want to start a thread on anti or pro hunting so...peace..and eat clean (remove the buckshot...LOL)0 -
yeah for sure we're deffinately going to dissagree on this one. You keep feeding them, Ill keep shooting them. At least you're helping by doing that, most anti hunters dont do anything for wildlife. Cheers Dave!0

mmm wild game... I'd rather eat wild meat than chemical fed, genetically engineered, brutally mistreated commercialized meat anyday!! The salmon up there is amazing I hear!0 -
I love the wild game here... We always do awesome during fishing season, so we trade salmon and halibut for moose and caribou... Sorry, Dave
This year a co-worker gave us so much that we've been eating very well all winter! But my favorite would definitely be the fresh fish-we love making salmon and halibut, and we get spoiled because my mom cans salmon for us. Instead of having tuna fish sandwiches, my kids eat salmon sandwiches-much, much better!!! We also use it to make salmon chowder during the cold spells. Every summer we also make a bunch of smoked salmon. Maybe next year, I'll be nice and share!!

Right on! I fly fish for salmon during their run in the fall in ontario. I also moose and deer hunt which tends to fill up the freezer pretty well.0
