I need some ideas on what kind of exercises to do during that time of the month. I've heard it's not good to do ab exercises or to bend in weird postures (like I'd feel like doing that anyway) or to stand in one position for a long period of time. I worry about dealing with cravings and then not having ways of burning them off. I also tend to quit during that week and have a hard time starting again. Thanks!:flowerforyou:

I've never tried it though.
Here's a link to a few exercises:

I tried to get out of a spin class because of my P.. My husband told me that it is just an excuses and there is no reason to do a normal workout because of death con (that is the term we use in out house, and there are stages of death con) I did the class and there was no problem. I think just listen to your body. If you are not comfortable doing something, move on to the next.0

 Death con hahaha!!!
mechanicmom, you can do all the things you would normally do. If you are feeling tired, you may be a bit anemic, so take an iron supplement. Exercise actually helps to relieve cramps. I always lift as hard as possible because during menses human growth hormone is at its highest...women actually have more GH in their systems than men do at that time. It's great for muscle growth and repair! :happy:0 -
There are a very few extreme yoga poses you would avoid, but if you listen to your body and think confidently you will find that your body works the same as every other day.
As a matter of fact exercise can actually ease the symptoms related to your periods, so go for it!0 -
I agree with ICANDOIT... just listen to your body.

Just FYI: taking too much iron is bad as well...might wanna get a check up and see if you really are anemic before starting an iron supplement. I was severely anemic and the Dr's watch to see if you have too much iron, or too little while you take supplements.
Too much can cause big health problems as well...my uncle has too much and has to have his blood drained every few months. :noway:0 -

That's crazy! I'm sorry to hear that, but it's really interesting at the same time. Was he born with an excess of red blood cells?
Iron does upset my stomach a bit...I took the pill that had iron in the 'off' week, but I was nauseas all the time. I'm hoping to find something OTC that's not as strong.0 -
I think we're all a bit tired at that time of the month. I know I feel absolutely drained for about a day and a half just before. The more I cramp, the more I exercise! It works so much better than any pill or potion I've tried! Also, watch your diet. The more junk you eat, the worse you'll feel at that time of the month. When I stay away from processed foods, and eat plenty of fruits and vegetables, preferrably raw, I cramp very little. When I do, I work, work, work, work it out! I've also never heard of not doing any positions. On my heaviest days, I just adjust the protection.0

The only exercise I have ever been told to avoid was by a yoga instructor who said I should not be in positions that interrupt the natural "flow" of things. So, she said no lying on my back with my feet in the air. Other than that, I have never been told to avoid any exercises. I do find that if my cramps are bad :explode: I will avoid ab exercises for that day, but I will do cardio no matter what, especially to counteract my increased appetite that time of the month!0

Whenever I complained of cramps when I was growing up my mom would yell at me to "go ride a bike". She got the same from her mother. So I don't know if it really works or whether it's just my hertiage, but whenever I am cramping or having extreme PMS I hop on the bike!0

Cramps can interrupt the most dedicated! Everyone has to deal with them in their own way. My college roommate's period was so bad she would lie in bed & vomit for three days. Good thing that doesn't make me queasy!
Cramps are simply uterine contractions. Think of it as a charlie-horse in your leg, do you just sit there and let it cramp? Nope, you move and try to stop the spasm! That's why activity usually makes you feel better when you have cramps. Yeah, I would avoid abs too, but go for a walk or jog. Riding your bike requires use of the abdominal/core muscles in order to switch legs while pedaling. Our fore-mothers had no idea why, they just knew it worked! :flowerforyou:0
