In the summer of 2009 I came home from a show, sat down on the couch, and 2 hours later, when I stood up, could hardly walk to the bedroom. For the next week I was in a state of intense physical knee pain, culminating with my husband having to wheel me into the emergency room the following weekend because I literally could not walk. I was told I had early onset osteoarthritis (at 28!) and woudl need to lose weight (I was 303 lbs at the time, and only 5'6). I was given a cortisone shot in my knee and sent on my way.

In the past year and a half it has been an uphill battle. I started regular cardio workouts, 4 times a week for about 30 minutes each time back in January of 2010, but saw no results. I'd get depressed about how I was working "so hard" and the scale wasn't budging, and of course, would then eat. During this time I was also facing struggled with infertility and dealing with repressed issues from when I was a child, along with starting a new job and finishing my undergraduate degree. Instead of dealing with the stress properly, I stuffed it down with food, wine, and very small amounts of exercise.

Then I began having fears. Fears of seeing myself naked in the bathroom mirror, fears of my husband being repulsed by me (which he has never been, but still), fears of being in a wheelchair from bad knees, fears of no longer being able to fir into the biggest clothes at Lane Bryant. Fears of airplanes, job interviews, even old friends, who wouldn't see my heart, sense of humor, intelligence and wit, but simply see a quivering, overcompensating mound of fat.

As fate would have it, I met an 'ex-fattie' at a party in September, who also used to be over 300 lbs abd over 3 years, slowly worked the weight off through portion control and daily excersise. She mentioned Hot Yoga, also known as Bikram Yoga, and how it re-shaped her body and her self-esteem.

After doing some research to make sure it was safe, I took the plunge and haven't looked back. Hot Yoga helps control my appetite, burns a huge amount of calories and enables me to see my body as a perfect tool that enables me to stretch and move around- not a burden. In the first month of hot yoga I dropped 12 lbs, and got more serious about getting in shape.

I know I have an endless journey ahead of me, but for the first time, it is a journey that excites me.
