What is your opinion on Keva Juice? They bill themselves as a healthy venue... are their smoothies really healthy?

Hmmm maybe no one has any opinions LOL.

I went today b/c I had a gift certificate, and I got a Berry Berry Good smoothie which had 285 calories for a 24 oz size... I thought that was a pretty good deal. It is high in carbs/ sugars but that is mainly from fruit... it has raspberries, blueberries, and sherbert. So it seems pretty healthy to me but perhaps that is too big of a portion size due to all of that sugar!

Hmmm maybe it's a Southwestern thing. I read that the owner started it because he wanted more health food options available. He also owns a chain of health stores or gyms or something.

never heard of it before, but I went on their website. They are fruit juice smoothies basically. They don't look any better or worse then other smoothies made with fruit juice (and some vegies too I guess), but the thing that bothered me was that they didn't put any sugar information in the nutrition area (besides saying they don't ADD any). Fruit juice is very high in fructose. While fructose is moderately better for you then sucrose and much better then HFCS, it's still not cool to take in large quantities without AT LEAST having it be locked up in fiber (like it is when you eat the whole fruit.)
So I don't know about this product.

Thanks SHBoss, that is exactly what I was wondering. I know the Berry Berry Good smoothie I had had a lot of sugar because it was only fruit and sherbert. But I also know that fruit is good for me so I wasn't sure how healthy it really was! It seemed like a *lot* of sugar (24 oz).

I think it was fine for a treat but I'm going to abstain from having it on a regular basis. Just because I am not sure if it's good for me or not and I know that an apple, or a banana, or an orange, etc. is good for me, so I will just eat one of those! ;)

Sounds like a good plan to me!

except for the makers of these juices/smoothies all information I have come across is always this-

    fruit? yes in moderation

fruit juice? no, sugar and cals too high to outweigh benefits unless you just gave blood or something of an urgent nature

Thanks Dave, see this is where I get confused...

How could one have too much fruit?? Aren't they full of antioxidants and other healthy benefits? Don't they have only "good" sugar? And who ever gained weight eating apples and grapes??

Re: fruit juice... again, I'm clueless, I thought it just drained out the juice we would normally eat in the fruit. SMBoss' comment made sense, that in juice form it doesn't have the fiber.

I always thought I could eat as much fruit, veggies, and lean protein as I wanted and not gain weight. It seems to be the grains and dairy that make me gain weight. Am I wrong?

Oh it's possible to eat too much fruit, it's hard, but possible. The fiber tends to fill you up before you can get TOO packed, and fructose in it's natural form doesn't spike blood sugar levels, so it's not like eating sugar packets. Part of the reason fruit is far better then fruit juice is because a lot of the sugar in fruit is locked up in water soluble fiber, which takes a little while to digest. So the sugar is taken in over a longer period. This, however, is not the case with juice. And because sugar is still sugar (even as fructose), it's still going to be stored as fat if you can't immediately use it. So chug a glass of juice and all that sugar is released into the body at the same time which means a lot of it won't be used and thus stored as fat.

I also USED to think that lots of fruit has to be great for me,,,,but sugar,,,even from fruit, it is real easy to get too much, at least for me...dairy and whole grains....also in moderation but I use real butter, real milk and prefer ezekial grain products moderation with everything seems to be working for me
    EATING CLEAN is so nice!

Okay. I get it. I'm glad to see I can still have lots of fruit because I love it!!! But I usually eat it in regular form, not in juices. So I think I'm good to go. I have maybe 3 - 4 servings a day... such as banana and blueberries in my oatmeal or cereal, a peach or a pear for a snack, an apple with peanut butter or in my salad for dinner, etc. I hope this is not too much fruit.

yep, I see nothing wrong with that amount of fruit, especially if you space it out like that. Blueberries are GREAT! Good antioxidents in them. Apparently (so I'm told), blackberries are even better. Plus most of the berries are low in sugar. Bananas are a little high, but they have other VERY good qualities that make them a good choice for breakfast.

Okay good, I'm feeling much better about my fruit intake. I just didn't know what "moderate" was supposed to mean!
