staying full throughout the day

So I have been part of MFP for a little while and recently started posting and replying and eventually will get to completing my profile with pictures etc. That said, I apologize ahead of time if some posts are redundant or obvious.

My question for now is about staying full throughout the day. I have an office job so I just sit all day and try to go for a walk at lunch. Today for example I had two fried eggs with wheat toast from a cafe next door and a turkey sandwhich on one slice of wheat bread (mustard not mayo :) ) and I am still struggling to suppress my hunger. I even had some beef jerky and sunflower seeds as snacks just to hold myself off until dinner tonight after the gym. I know I only have like 2 hours to go but this happens every day no matter what I eat.

It could be the fact that I am trying to eat a lot less than I am used to but I am trying to go for some belly filling foods. Any suggestions?

Also note: I am well aware of the nutritional value of nuts and how they can keep you full. Unfortunately I am allergic so those are out of the question along with any product associated with them.

  • I would suggest prepping low cal high fiber foods like pepper strips, carrots, apples, and try filling up with hot calorie free drinks like different teas such as green tea. You should allow healthy snacks in between to help bridge the hunger gap otherwise you will spend lots of time waiting for the next meal which tend to turn into overeating. I like cheese sticks and nuts too paired with fruit.

    Here are my suggestions:

try to find some protein bars that will not aggravate your allergy. Clif builder bars are good in chocolate and chocolate mint.
    apples
berries - raspberries & strawberries have a lot of fiber
carrots - have good amount of fiber
cheese sticks - cracker barrel 2% milk extra sharp cheddar are the best IMO
Kozy shack no sugar added Tapioca pudding cups - or other pudding cups that are about 100 calories with 3-4g EACH of protein and fiber.
cinnamon cheerios or shredded wheat (dry, no milk, as a snack). Fiber one makes a good frosted shredded wheat, and kashi makes a few different kinds
Celery & cucumber are very low calorie, so you can fill up your belly good on these. It is mostly water, but all that crunching helps and it will fill you up some.
Yogurt - greek (non fat or 2%) and regular - just be sure no added sugar. I hate yogurt, but people on here eat it a lot. I give my husband the stoneyfield organic yokids yogurts, because it is lower in sugar than most and he tells me the texture is nice, kind of like a custard.

Consider making your own deli meat sandwiches - you can control the bread and meat - so if you choose wisely you can end up having a bigger sandwich for the same or less calories. I try to look for bread that is between 70-90 calories per slice that has a couple grams each of protein or fiber - or you can do the sandwich thin that everyone makes. Applegate farms and Wellshire farms (whole foods) both have many good lean deli meat options. Look up the nutri. info on here - I eat wellshire farms corned beef or pastrami every week, and applegate farms french style ham or maple ham, or various turkeys with an ounce of cheese.

Those are my suggestions, good luck! Being hungry at work sucks.

I was hungrier when I was younger. You didn't really post any information about yourself. I also have a desk job and am able to snack but I'm not as hungry as you are.

Can you make yourself protein shakes? do you like energy bars? Are you gettiing enough raw fruits and veggies? Drinking water?

And lastly are you SURE you aren't bored, not hungry?

Pretty sure it's not boredom. I do have a lot of downtime sometimes so its possible that its a factor. Veggies I usually don't get until dinner and fruits I am trying to bring in more to breakfast. I am going through a serious change with my daily meals and figuring out how to bring more nutritious meals into work by cooking them for the week or something.

I've never really tried protein shakes and I can't really do many (if any) energy bars because of my nut allergy. Even if there are no nuts in them I have to me somewhat weary when they are "processed in the same facility"

I also was starving when I first started...

A typical breakfast for me is a wrap with chicken, laughing cow light cheese, mushrooms, capsicum and spinach.

A typical lunch is usually leftovers of dinner - a small serve of pasta or rice with chicken, beef, or ground turkey and lots of veggies.

I find that by including lots of veggies and a protein in my breakfast and lunch I am fuller throughout the day. I usually go over on my protein, which I've heard isn't a bad thing.

As time goes on, I'm including much more volume in my main meals and only snacking after dinner (I know, I know, some say it's bad but I can't break the habit and so save calories for this purpose).

A medium size firm green apple
    3 cups hot air popcorn
    a very cold water bottle
chewing gum (sugarless, but watch the carbs ... one brand had 2 carbs per piece!)
I eat fresh salad with no dressing. Running errands today I tossed it into a plastic bag in my car

A small or medium banana that is not fully ripe will also fill you in between meals

I am home all day and my freezer is full of cookies. They are always screaming at me to come eat them. So be thankful you don't have snacks handy. LOL.

Also raspberries are low cal and packed with fiber.

2 hours? well...nothing wrong with feeling hungry for a bit...learn to like it
  • This was so helpful! I have the same problem and was looking for new things to eat. For snack I usually eat dried apricots or nuts but eating the same thing everyday isn't fun. What type/brand of tortilla are best for making wraps?
