So, today I went to the doctors because I have been getting some pretty irritating arch pain, and wanted some advice on what to do about it, or what not to do about it.

(Little background: I have always been a big walker, and lost 20lbs prior to starting MFP by keeping active while pregnant, and since I gave birth I was walking 1 hour+ three days or more per week)

As I am telling him about my arches and how they have been recently hurting after my runs and in the morning, he stops me and tells me "Well then you need to stop running". I looked at him slightly confused and he says "Well you need to walk before you can run". Then he asked "Well why would you run, like what made you want to do this?" I was so mad I could not respond.

I felt so judged!! I felt like he just assumed that because I am heavy that I have never worked out a day in my life.

After that I went to a specialty running store, and then to a sports injury place and they were more than happy to help me figure out that I have collapsed arches and that I have been over-correcting them which was most likely what was causing my pain.

F'n Doctors!

I think it's time to find a new doctor then. I can't believe they treated you like that. There should be a way you can leave a nice little review on that so called "doctor" Keep up the good work and keep doing what you are doing :) "F" the doctor
  • I went to a doctor earlier in the year to find treatment for my knees (im knock kneed) and he said i wasnt knocked kneed, that my problem was i was obese. he went on to say that i should only eat one meal a day (a type of nut) because i didnt get fat by "breathing air" but because i ate. i spent 45 minutes in his office listening to him degrade me before i finally walked out in tears.

I was knock kneed before i was over weight. While im sure the weight doesnt help it any, it isnt the only problem either!
    Doctors are stupid sometimes!
  • Yes, a more appropriate response would have been for him to ask you about your normal activity level and what not.. Doctors definitely do pre-judge a lot of people, especially those that are a bit heavy. That really sucks and I'm sorry you had to deal with that from someone who is supposed to be professional and what not.. Discrimination of any kind is not appropriate in a Dr. office.

On the arch pain, I definitely have arch problems as well (since I was a kiddo) and they can definitely put the hurt on your feet, knees, hips and even your back!! Get yourself a nice (podiatrist-made, preferably) pair of orthotics and a supportive pair of tennies and I bet you'll be feeling like a million bucks!! :) I just recently got a pair of New Balance that I love...

I have the mint-green ones.. SO cute and SOOOO comfy!! =D I hope your feet get to feeling better soon!

Doctors are so cute when they have no clue and still the words come seeping out of their mouths. HE/SHE should refer you to a podiatrist so you can get proper treatment/support for your arches..
    Good luck to you!!

Sorry for saying this, but what an A-hole...

and this is one heck of a NSV for you... not letting a person demotivate you... having the knowledge and for thought to seek
another opinion from the shoe place....

Great job not taking not taking that answer and seeking the truth.. next step maybe find a new dr...

    AWESOME JOB!

I totally agree. The biggest thing here is that now you're confident enough in yourself and in your body to know that there was something wrong, not just what that doctor thought was poor judgement (which clearly wasn't, looking at your ticker). Good job for you!

You guys are right! I guess it was a small victory, knowing he was wrong. I should probably get used to people mis-judging me as non-athletic until I really "look the part".
