Protein & Carbs

I've been getting frustrated with my workouts and weight loss. I'm currently working out 4-5 times a week. My workouts include a mixture of cardio and strength training. I'm trying to lose 5-10lbs but all I am doing is maintaining weight. Last year a friend suggested a start cutting back carbs and increasing my protein intake. I tried it for a few weeks and the weight came off really quickly. It was really hard to maintain though with cutting out the carbs. I missed my cereal, bread, and higher carb fruits. In order to increase my protein intake I started drinking a protein shake on days I worked out and ate lots of eggs, cheese, chicken, and peanut butter.
I'm wondering if anyone can suggest other protein rich foods or comment on how carbs fit into this. Is there a ratio I should be following?
