When Does The Mind Catch Up?

I've been at my goal weight, give or take 5 lbs, for several months now and...
When I pull clothes for the day out of my closet, they always looks like there is no way they'll fit me. My mind still has this fat mentality.
When I first started this journey I was in a loose 44 pants and 2x - 3x shirts.
Now I can wear 34 pants and large shirts.
How long does it take the mind to fully grasp the new you?

The mind catches up when it has fully become a lifestyle change. When you have shed every little bit of that old you, even the old thought process.0

I don't know if your mind will ever fully catch up. I have lost a total of 126lbs and have maintained that weight loss for 5years now and I still look at the size medium/large clothes which use to never fit and wonder if they will fit now. When I try them on they drown me, I almost always wear a small, once in awhile a medium.
Even though I know that I watch what I eat and I am still exercising I know how easy it can be to gain it back, so I am constantly worried that I will. I still weigh myself every 2 weeks to make sure I stay on track with my maintanence goals and such.0 -
I have this problem as well, and I only lost half of what you did. I guess we can't expect a lifetime of being one way to change, even in a few month.0

I don't know, because I look at my body and still just see Fat Flausa. I'm okay looking at pictures and sort of accept it, but just don't see thin when I look in the mirror.0

I wish mfp had a maintenance forum. I could really benefit from discussing issues related to maintaining my weight loss. Any suggestions on where to get this support?0

I have the same issue - lost 70 pounds, and I still go for the XL clothes to try on first, then I put them on and I am swimming in them!
It is a weird feeling. I would like to know how to mentally change the way I think as well!

The mind is pretty slow with this change. I think being fat becomes embedded mentally and you need to wear it off0

I've been thinner, fatter and in between. No matter how I look I still hear my ex-husband saying mean things to me. I hope someday I can get over that. No matter what I look like!0

I've actually been wondering this for some time! I'm finding myself more aware of clothing (now that they have begun to shrink a bit) and I am very glad to see this posted!
I would guess that it's a mental acceptance of everything. I feel like shopping will be a pain when I drag five different sizes to a dressing room, but I think over time your brain will reset from XL to M.0 -

Reading this comment made me so sad. Flausa, you obviously have worked extremely hard to get to your new weight and to have your new body. You should love looking at yourself and seeing all your accomplishments. When I'm feeling a little down I put on my old fat clothes, that were starting to get a little too tight, and seee how baggy they are now.0
