Beginners Yoga

A friend and I are over the half way point on the 30 day shred. We want to try yoga after this to work on flexibility. Any suggestions on beginners yoga videos?

Get a human teacher, not a video.

I do recommend trying a few classes with an instructor just to get the form down - this is especially important in yoga. If that's not an option, try looking up the Beginner's DVD from Rodney Yee (you might find it at your library but it's also on Amazon). He breaks down many poses and explains form and what you should concentrate on in the pose. After you feel good about your form, try some other Rodney Yee stuff.

Sara Ivanhoe is already a really great instructor and incorporates good flow with her practice. She also has a number of DVDs available.

Enjoy it - I love yoga and incorporate it into my weekly workout schedule without fail!

Yoga journal and others have free podcast, which might be a good start. Finding the right teacher makes all the difference though.

I have a few yoga DVDs from Gaiam and Body Wisdom, and they are great, but I do think that dropping in on a class or two is good, because you can't always tell how your downward dog looks. It is nice to have someone there every so often to see if you are in the right positions.

I think it's good to do DVDs for most of the workouts, but just attend a couple of live classes to see how you are doing.

Definitely go to a class. It took me years to figure that out, but you get SO much more out of it.

People think they're pricy, but there are tons of small yoga studios now that are really cheap! I've never paid more than $15 for a one-hour class. I've paid as little as $12 or $8 to drop in.
