Ok, silly question. I'm new to photo editing software and want to download a free program that is simply. I want to put picture side by side to compare then share on here. Any suggestions? Also how do you learn to use it?

Picasa by Google is free and easy to use. GIMP is less simple to use but gives you more options (similarly to Adobe's Photoshop) and is also free.

    http://www.gimp.org/

picnik.com is a free online tool for editing pictures and I love some of their effects.

How to learn to use it? I am a huge fan of the learning by doing approach, but learning by googling comes in a close second. ;)

Just use Paint - already on your computer.
    Works great!

^^^ This! I even use paint for work and I'm an online journalist! Use the outline tool (dotted rectangle) to outline the bit of a photo you want to copy or cut, the rest is self-explanatory!
