Random home improvement question? (Walk-In closet)

Hey there
My fiance and I are moving into this very (I mean very) large apartment currently. We're in the process of the new carpet, paint, ect.

We have two (soon to be three) extra rooms that are about a nursery size, one which is my designated my work out room, and I want to make the one by the bedroom my walk in closet.

Anyone have any ideas on how to do this on a budget? I'm only 18 so I don't have too much home improvement experience :laugh: but I'm determined to do this without the man's help. The rooms about six by eight feet.

Also, I don't even know how to build a shelf, :embarassed: but I'm sure I can find that on google.

I have thought about making our spare bedroom a walk in closet. I think it's a great thing but probably you just need to plan out what types of storage you need first (plus allow for expansion of certain collections). Like you say shelves are easy but the main problem is drawing up a really good plan before you hit the hardware store.

Don't let your pride get the better of you. Ask for help..and I don't mean Internet help..get someone who can be hands-on and who might be willing to teach you some basic tools and skills. It shows wisdom and maturity. Doing a project wrong costs more and takes longer than doing it right the first time.

Go to your local Lowe's or Home Depot and check out their closet organizer section. Talk to the people there. That will at least give you some ideas, and most of them are fairly easy to install. Keep in mind that if you are planning on hanging a lot of clothes on a "rod", you will need to find a stud in the wall to attach it to.....in my first apartment it wasn't done right and the entire rod pulled out of the wall and fell. Have fun!

Did you buy the apartment? If this isn't something you are trying to make super permanent...I'd say go the ikea route.

There is so much more than just building it yourself. What conditions is the apartment in currently? Do you know if there is blocking in the walls for structural reasons? Do you know how you will design the shelving units?

Like someone else mentioned, remodeling is a lot of work. TV shows make it seem simple but it's not. Who knows what condition the gyp. board is and whether the structure can handle a concentrated dead load like you are waiting to put in that room (probably totally ok but you never know).

I would look for help, if I were you since you have no prior experiences with construction and construction tools. If you can't afford help, then go the IKEA route and buy storage units you can easily assemble yourself.
