Weight Loss by water

Hi..

About 5 years ago i lost some weight thru drinking the 8 glasses of water a day one should, and making better food choices. It was about 5 kgs in a 2 week period, and i remember someone made a remark.. "oh.. thats not fat lost thats water weight loss"..

Does anyone know if this water weight thing is true or is it just B.S?

I will admit she wasnt a nice person to me at the time...

Any help would be great..

Thankyou :)

    Sorry, but she's right - 5kg = 11lbs = 38,500 calories to lose that much fat. That's a calorie deficit of 2750 a day.

Oh, it's true. Especially if your sodium intake is high. (and the fact that females can retain water by simply looking at a slice of pizza  )

There is such a thing as water weight. When you up your liquid intake your body stops holding on to as much water and it can help you lose some weight. Frequently it is the reason why you lose more weight in the first week to week and a half of a diet change.

Some of it could of been true weight loss, likely a good deal was water weight.

Probably a bit of both. Drinking a lot of water will help your body eliminate the retained water. But it can also fill your belly to where you might eat fewer calories. If you are measuring success based on weight loss, then it doesn't matter where the weight is coming from -- fat or water. It's just great you made progress.

It seems that everyone loses a ton of weight right away, and then it slows down. People call it water weight. I think some of it is actually water- as you get more hydrated your body clings to that water less because it knows it will keep being replenished with more water so it's not as miserly with the water it gets. And I think some of it is your metabolism being kind of shocked with exercise and lower calories, and then as you continue your metabolism lowers to get used to the lower calories and your muscles get used to being used.

That said, whatever... a loss is a loss is a loss. I think it's a great motivator right at the beginning when people need it!

So true. I gained 12 pounds just from walking by the birthday cake in the office break room.
