    but in the context of someone who isn't lean, and is just trying to lose weight and asking about the best time to go to the gym, your answer is 100% irrelevant and only serves to mislead people who are trying to find the best way to do things.

    Personal preference.

    Performance in the gym will have a much more profound effect on the number of calories burned than any trivial metabolic differences due to fasting vs fed training.

    Sure, but for that performance you may have to eat more calories. in the vicinity of the training bout

    Given the same number of calories, eating something before training can positively effect the intensity of the training bout, thus leading to a higher overall caloric burn.

    Fasting, on the other hand, tends to have the reverse effect (for some).

    Bottom line, the decision what (and how much) to eat before or after training should be mediated by personal preference, NOT by concerns about trivial differences in fat oxidation during the bout
