Hey everyone!
I am 22 years old and I am currently working on trying to loose weight to join the Air Force. I am about 74 pounds overweight and I could really use the encouragement. Also if anyone has any tips for a new recruit that would be amazing.

use the approved food and diet guide ( me being canadian I use the canada food guide)
    control your portions and sizes
    exercise faithfully
if you eat properly I have found you will get the "exercise high"
  • Hi Jess! I am working on the same thing. I have about 55 lbs to lose until I join. (much better than the nearly 90 I needed to lose to begin with) If you need a buddy just add me. I am usually on all the time. The best advice I can give right now is watch your diet. This mean no pop/soda, stay away from greasy foods and watch what you are eating. Use your food diary to figure out what foods are giving you the protein you need without eating needless calories. Do not skip meals or starve yourself though. That only ruins your metabolism and makes it even harder. Watching what you eat around the holidays is hard. So much good food. Just watch your porportions and still eat the food that you like at family gatherings just smalled amounts. Then get back on track after the holiday. It also helps if you skip that bad snacks that you can have all the time in order to enjoy the seasonal stuff. The main thing is just being aware of what you are eating and hold yourself accountable for it. Sometimes being accountable it hard and humiliating. It often works better if you have another person to hold yourself accountable too.

As far as working out goes... you need to work out for at least 45 minutes 5-6 days a week. Walk, jog, run. Do it at your own pace but push yourself. work on improvement. You are going to need to be able to do a timed 1.5 mile. It will be nice to time yourself once a week at that distance to see your improvement but I would suggest working on doing 3 miles. If you keep pushing yourself it will make the 1.5 easier. Plus right now with the amount of weight we need to lose we need to be doing a lot of cardio. Also make sure that in every work out that you are doing push ups and sit ups.

Just keep working on it. Set yourself goals and make them high ones. Tell yourself that you want to lose 10 lbs by a certain date. Make it a short time period but remember that it is awesome to lose 2 lbs a week. So if you dont reach your goal dont get upset or discouraged. Just keep pushing and surround yourself with support if you can. If you need it, I will gladly support you. Normally I wouldnt tell you to push yourself to lose weight in a short period of time because losing it gradually is much better for maintaining it over your life. However in situations like this, you are truly changing your entire lifestyle and it will remain changed once you are in the Air Force. So you might as well just get it done.

I hope that will help :) Good Luck to you. I know you can do it.
