Holiday Treats

A lot of paranoia and stress in the forums around the holidays and the treats that come with them. It's too bad...

I look forward to two items in particular, that my mother makes every Christmas...

1. Pumpkin bread with chocolate chips
2. Nummies - no idea what the "true" name is, but it's a combination of broke-up pretzels, raisins, peanuts, and Rice Krispies mixed with melted peanut butter and white chocolate, left to cool in little mounds.

Mom makes this treats every year, with a lot of love. Any time I've been out of the area, she's mailed these treats to me, and it's helped make the sting of being apart a little less painful. The Christmas when Mom is not around, or unable to make them, will be a very sad one -- for many reasons.

I plan to enjoy these treats in moderation this year, and enjoy Mom's company in excess this holiday season. :drinker:

Any favorite or sentimental treats you look forward to each year?

Ginger scallion stir-fried lobster in the shell!!!!! My dad and I both go gaga over it ... I inherited his side of the family's love of shellfish and seafood (although, ironically, I couldn't stand the stuff when I was a kid ... oh, how little I knew then.)

Nummies are what you get when you rub "something" on your gums

My SIL makes something like this and calls is Puppy Chow. My dear god it is delicious.

I hear of so many people that do seafood on Thanksgiving or Christmas, and it makes me incredibly jealous.

My brother mixes chili with cream cheese as a dip, and calls it "dog food". Looks eerily similar, but tastes great!

My mom, sister and I all make a christmas morning breakfast "cake".

It is essentially a sour cream pound cake with VERY little baking soda in the recipe so it hardly rises at all. It bakes for over an hour at a very low temp....We nick named it "Packy" a long time ago and it is VERY VERY sweet and buttery tasting......ahhhhh, memories.

And, there is always a funny story from one of us...one year my sister's oven caught fire! Last year I made it into mini muffins and called it "Packy To Go!" My kids who are 18 and 21 love it!

We all agree it is sweet, rich, unhealthy but all about LOVE!

All my favorites have to be recreated GF and allergen free, but I'm going to be totally honest.

We roast the turkey with bacon on top, my favorite part is eating the turkey skin and bacon. *drifts off to a happy place*

Probably Asian. We're "terrible" like that. We did a mix on Thanksgiving one year ... I roasted the turkey and cooked the side dishes/trimmings, and my mother prepped everything for the hot pot (the trendy call it "shabu shabu"), including unshelled shrimp. That was a good year. :drinker:

Every year at Thanksgiving I make my Dad's stuffing and pumpkin pies and at Christmas I make his sugar cookies. It gives me a little something to remember him by. And I make Orange Dream Cookies every year too. Something others can use to remember me by. :-)

A french green bean casserole (not the crappy cream of mushroom soup one) This has sour cream, swiss cheese (LOTS of it) and corn flakes on top. That and a sweet spicy home made honey mustard my mom makes!

My mom used to make this funky neapolitan cookies, she doesn't make them anymore, but I do! :) They are GREAT!

I also make peanut butter blossoms, caramel corn, peppermint bark, and whatever else sounds good. LOL Thinking about making divinity (??sp??) this year!

I always have the kids pack up some goodies and take them to their teachers, friends, etc..... And I always give my neighbors a care package of our homemade treats.

I have a couple of neighbors that light up when they see my kids headed over with a plate of christmas cookies & candy. LOL

Fudge mint covered oreos! They only come out this time of year! Last year I REALLY overdid it in December and went through 4 or 5 boxes. My husband, being the GENIUS that he is, suggested we buy 4 or 5 boxes this year and FREEZE them so that I can make them last throughout the year! It was all I could do to keep from getting down on my knees and bowing to his greatness!
I haven't bought them yet, but I will!

Christmas eve is a no meat day so we usually have homemade mushroom soup with homemade noodles and homemade perogi's for our dinner. Since the invention of processed foods, we only make the soup from scratch and use regular egg noodles and boxed perogi's, but its still the same feeling, now we just have more time to enjoy each other.

Shame on me. I failed to mention... my wife's tamales. Pork in red chile, jalapeno slices with cheese, and sweet tamales with raisins and coconut. Hot damn!

Thanksgiving and Christmas are the only 2 times of year that I have pie, so I look forward to it. Warm apple or pecan pie with french vanilla ice cream is my favorite.
