"Secret Ingredient" in Orange Juice

I have to say that fear mongering articles (also people) like this really annoy me. This article is is raving about how orange juice companies that claim on their labels to be 100% Orange Juice AREN'T 100% Orange Juice because they have a "Secret Ingredient".

What is this "Secret Ingredient" they are so upset about? Ground up Orange Peels, Pulp, and Orange Oil derived from the oranges called "Flavor Packs". These flavor packs, which are completely derived from oranges, are added to the orange juice to keep the taste and texture consistent from one bottle to the next. Each company has their own patented flavor pack to differentiate their taste from the next company's.

http://abcnews.go.com/Health/orange-juice-moms-secret-ingredient-worries/story?id=15154617#.TuzCBbJFusp

HOW DARE THESE COMPANIES USE AN ACTUAL ORANGE TO KEEP THEIR PRODUCT CONSISTENT AND THEN LABEL THEIR PRODUCT "100% ORANGE JUICE"! OBVIOUSLY ADDING ORANGE TO ORANGE JUICE IS UNHEALTHY, DECEPTIVE, AND KILLING OUR CHILDREN! YOU SHOULD ALL STOP DRINKING ORANGE JUICE JUST LIKE THE WOMEN IN THIS ARTICLE!!!! [/Sarcasm]

Come on, people. Don't we have more important things to worry about than Orange Juice companies putting ORANGES in their orange juice? We've already lost Apple Juice to Arsenic (naturally found in apples), Baby Carrots to Chlorine (not at all true), and Bananas to Flesh Eating Viruses (again not true), must we also lose Orange Juice to Oranges???

And with that [/Rant]

Not sure I want the peels in my juice because of pesticides, but if they can somehow remove that, I really don't care.

    THINK OF THE CHILDREN!

Yeah.... those poor children! No... not the ones being poisoned by having oranges in their orange juice... the ones with crazy over bearing parents who don't let them have orange juice because *gasp!* there are oranges in their orange juice! Poor kids.

Yeah I pretty much ignore that crap. I rarely drink orange juice just because juice is so full of sugar and calories, and doesn't have the benefits of the fiber and stuff from the fruit itself :)

    *sobs*

you mean... there are ORANGES in my ORANGE JUICE?

This is a crime against humanity. I demand ALL the money I've paid for orange juice with oranges in it - back. Right now. Class action lawsuit, here I come.

That's actually interesting. It explains why some 100% orange juices are consistently better than others.

WHAT?!! Are you meaning to tell me that orange juice has bits of...ORANGES in it?! That's preposterous. Totally unreasonable and unhealthy. Next thing you're gonna tell me is orange marmalade has orange peels in it. SAVE THE CHILDREN.

And yet, they market garbage like Nutella to kids and their gullible mommies because it's loaded with hazelnuts and "a hint of cocoa".

The rind and peel actually have a bit of additional nutrition in them, and researchers are exploring the benefits of the pectin in orange peel. I say wash them good and give me the secret ingredient!

I made a cranberry, orange, apple relish for thanksgiving just to get some of that great stuff into our diet!

I think they are upset because when I think orange juice I think someone juiced an orange. Not someone took orange juice then f*cked with it so it always has a consistent taste. And the ingredients aren't required to say anything. Marketing.

Just like tropicana 50. How do you get pure orange juice to have 50% less calories? Oh you add filtered water and use half the actual oj and sell it for the same price.

I do think it's sad that they have to go to that length to produce juice. And it is deceptive.

Edit: also, this is Soooo old. Seriously? If you think they have better things to do than complain about processing procedures of food/drinks that's sad. Everyone should know and have the right to choose whether or not to consume something.

I don't think it is sad at all. I prefer my orange juice to have a consistent taste. When I buy Tropicana, I want it taste like Tropicana and when I buy Minute Made, I want it to taste like Minute Made. I also have no problem with them adding other ground up pieces of the orange... they would probably be in there if I juiced my own oranges. I also appreciate that they have found a way to make the orange juice taste good by using parts of the orange after pasteurization (which I am also thankful for because I don't want to get sick) removes some of the natural orange taste. I see no cause for alarm or upset here. Just fear mongering.

Well you like that. Awesome. But there are people who are entitled to their opinion and this information should be more readily available/displayed so people can make that choice for themselves.

Again, the reason I dont think they like it is because it's deceptive not stating what is really is. Fresh squeezed orange juice with natural orange flavorings.

  • We all stopped drinking apple juice simply because it gives my son a rash in his little diaper from all the sugar. =P

But gods be damned, I'm not giving up orange juice.

Oh, wait, articles are saying they use actual oranges in orange juice? o__o

Crap, time to get back to Sunny D, I guess...

I don't understand how it is "deceptive" the label says "100% Orange Juice" which by definition means that in the bottle is Juice made from Oranges. What part of that is untrue? They took Oranges and they made Juice from it.
  • I buy simply orange and simply apple. Just tastes better I think.

Jesus is this actually sold as a product somewhere? That's utterly ridiculous! I *always* water down my orange juice, firstly makes it easier to drink and makes your carton last a lot longer! Dammit i should have patented that as a miracle weight loss diet!!!
