Finding and keeping will power (regarding eating)

So I've been back at tracking my food/activities for about a month now. I'm starting to work out more, but it's getting discouraging because the food/eating aspect is not in sync with the calories burned. Some days are pretty decent and others I start out okay and the day just turns to crud. I think a lot of it is that I don't know how to whittle my calories down to stay in my targeted range and to be satisfied/satiated. I know I struggle with drinking too many calories, so I'm combating that by trying to drink more water instead.

I guess I want to knowis: if you ate a lot of calories before you started changing your lifestyle, how did you start to eat less? How are your calories spread out throughout the day? I'm trying to break the habit of emotional/binge eating and it's so hard. Any tips for breaking the cycle and learning to stick to a lower caloric range? Would it be wiser to step down from say, 2200 calories a day to 1800, then 1400? Or just jump straight to 1400?

I haven't lost any weight yet, and I'm frustrated. I find the message boards to be full of great information and helpful advice, so here I post. I'm not ready to give up yet, and I know that by working on my problems things will have to change. Thanks in advance.
