Just a young doctor deciding it's time to take her own advic

Hi everyone! My name's Ali. I'm 25 years old and I joined MFP 8 days ago because I decided it was time to start following the advice I give my patients; "Eat well, exercise regularly, be a healthy weight and drink plenty of water!"

Since moving out of home at 17 to study medicine my weight slowly crept up from 70ishkg to 80+ kilos. I'm quite tall (175cm/5'9") and lucky in that fat distributes evenly across my body so I didn't "see" the problem until I was way past 'healthy'. I joined MFP because it makes perfect sense to me that weight loss = energy from food < exercise + basal metabolic rate.

I weighed in at the gym last Saturday at 81.3kg. One week later my weight is now 79.5kg! I'm aiming to lose 1.5kg a fortnight - I'm not in any hurry and I want this to be a lifestyle change rather than a fad diet. I look forward to being an active member of the MFP community and hope to give as much inspiration as I have already received from all the amazing success stories! In the long term I hope to be working in the community and supporting my patient's in their weight loss journeys so I think this is a great place to start!

  • Welcome :) It's really nice that you don't just give advice, but want to give example :)
  • Good for you. It's hard, sometimes, for health care providers to see, and admit, their own problems. I'm an RN but at 395#, my problem wasn't very easy to hide. I am down 97# now (with the help of Gastric Bypass) but I know even though you don't have all that much to lose, every pound is important to you, your well-being, and your health. You'll love this site. It is so supportive!

Thanks  It's funny when you work in health care and you worry so much about your patients but forget to look out for yourself. I regularly get panicked phone calls when a patient's urine output drops below 30mL/hour but there were days when I didn't go to the bathroom for an entire 12 hour shift because I wasn't drinking. And when I was eating, it was high calorie, poor quality food that I could grab on the run. Not any more! I'm making a change

Words of wisdom from a surgery resident many years ago: "Eat when you can, pee when you can, sleep when you can."

But the food's gotta be the right stuff. I'm in pretty much exactly the same boat, but I'm shorter and have more to lose. Time to put my money where my mouth is, and prove to the people I'm caring for that it is NOT an impossible thing to ask of them! Good for you, for putting yourself out there. This is a great community in a lot of ways, and there are a surprising number of healthcare professionals floating around here. :)

This is great , I wish you the very best.
My last doctor was always telling me I was overweight and I should do this and that while his belly ooozed over his pants & he moved so slowly around the surgery.
No wonder I couldn't take him seriously.

I now have a lovely doctor who is very supportive and she gets excited when I have lost weight and things like my b/p & cholesterol have gone down.
She seems to live what she prescribes and it feels good. I actually feel like I want to please her as much as my self, lol
I commend you for being the example.
