Lunge modifications? Any PTs/other MFPers with suggestions?

I blew out both achilles tendons in an accident a few years ago. I had bilateral repairs, sat around in double casts for 2.5 mo., and 18 mo later finished my PT/rehab with dr. approval to start working out again... as long as I did low impact/no strain on the repairs. That means: no running, jumping, walking on inclines, etc.

A lot of my workouts (30DS, kettlebell workouts, etc.) have me doing lunges. I just don't have the strength or flexiblity/ROM in my heel to do the moves. Is there any way I can modify lunges to reduce strain on the AT or is there a substitution that will also work out my but and legs.

Example of a move I can't do without turning my back leg to the side to take strain off my AT:

Squat and pass it under your legs. It might take you a few times to get an idea of how low you need to squat. If you squat too high you can't get it into your other hand. Squat too low and you can't pass it under.
