Lifting Weight for OLD Lady

OK. A coworker has a set of 25 pound dumbbells at his desk. I can do one (ONE! LOL) bicep curl in proper form and fail at two (can complete but use my back and I do know proper form.) I can do three sets of ten reps of squats with one in each hand fairly easily.

What weight would you suggest for bicep curls to start and for squats to start?

And I am 60 with a bad back and lots of extra poundage.

There's no starting weight that I, or anyone, can suggest. What I do think you should do is work out how many 'reps' you want to do (say, 10?) and find a weight where you can complete the set, with the last couple being a struggle, but doable... Once you're not struggling on those last few, move up.

For squats I'd just do body-weight (no extra weights) until you know you have proper form and need a challenge, then move up.

My trainer started me with 8 lbs and we started with 10 reps on each side. I think I'm up to 20 lbs now :)
