VO2 Max.... must read :)

Ok so I did a V02 max test today in exercise physiology. If you don't know what a V02 max is, it's basically the amount of oxygen someone can consume at maximal exercise. So yea you go until your about to pass out. Anyways, I had all this stuff hooked up to including a mask and I would go in different stages with the incline and speed increasing, on a treadmill, until I felt like I couldn't go anymore. When I stopped I felt like maybe I could have gone a little longer but OMG my legs were BURNING!!!! I was in the 90th percentile so I was pretty happy about that, my teacher said I did so good. :bigsmile: The point is if you guys have access to do one of these test I would suggest it! It can help tell you where you should be working out on a normal basis, obviously your not supposed to work out at the max but it can tell you where you should be pushing yourself too. I just thought I'd share, they do these tests at colleges and such, wherever they have the equipment. Let me know if you have any questions! It was a good experience for sure. :happy:

I'm going to find out where I can get this done. I've heard about tests like this at Universities. Are they usually free and open to non-students? :flowerforyou:0

I'm not sure, I know that sometimes our teacher has students bring volunteers in. I'm near Loma Linda so I think they do them. I'd say that if you are near a major university focused on science and health you could get it done. Or maybe a physical therapy school, doctor school, etc... Good luck!!!!

We do a fitness evaluation day at my university and it's open to everyone. However, it's not widely promoted or anything. We got extra points for evaluations so we liked having a lot of people come in.
I have done both the ergometer test and Balke treadmill test which are lower-intensity versions that are a little safer. In serious labs they will just wait for you the fall off the end of the treadmill. :laugh:0 -

Yea I'm sure it improves with exercise, she didn't talk about genetics but obviously some just have better lungs than others but if your fit you will have a better one for sure! I don't think I would have done that well a year ago but now that I run long distance I think that helped because my endurance is good. Gosh Lance's is probably insane!

Genetics and training both play a role. Men have larger lungs and hearts than women, but an active female will still probably have a greater VO2Max than a sedentary male because her heart and lungs will fill more efficiently. Lance is an incredible athlete. Have you heard of Dean Karnaze?0 -
