Tea may be a powerful weapon in the fight against strokes.
New research from the University of California, Los Angeles suggests that drinking at least three cups of tea a day may reduce the risk of stroke by 21 percent.
"We're getting more hard proof that this does change things, and it does reduce the risk," said Dr. Sadat Shamim, a neurologist at Baylor University Medical Center in Dallas.
Researchers say it appears black tea and green tea have similar beneficial effects.
"Right now, we believe that it's the antioxidants that are in the tea," Shamim said.
More research is needed to determine exactly how tea affects the body. But Shamim said doctors believe the compounds in tea may reduce damage to blood vessels.
Tea has several other advantages -- Sharmim said it has no side effects, is inexpensive and is easily available.
The UCLA study was funded by the maker of Lipton tea. Results were presented Thursday at the American Stroke Association International Conference in San Diego. The findings are published in the online journal Stroke.

Hi, I asked this earlier today on the Green Tea post, but would that only count for hot tea? Or what about Crystal Light Green Tea, natural? Just curious...I have drank blueberry breeze tea with splenda and vanilla soy milk, but since I live in FL, I don't want something to drink hot all the time!0

Wow I should never have a stroke then that is good news I have been drinking at least 6-8 cups of tea almost every day for most of my life. I never cared for soda but have always been a tea drinker.:drinker:0

I make iced green. I steap(sp) about 8 bags for a gallon of iced tea and I sweeten with xylitol now but whatever sweetner you like. Sometimes I mix it with black Earl Grey tea that is yummy in the summer and refreshing.0 -

One of the things I did was gradually cut back on the sweetener I put in tea so now I can drink it with no sweetener at all. I make iced tea by brewing for tea bags (two green, two herb) in a quart jar. I let it steep for awhile, sometimes overnight because I forget that it's there, then chill it in the refrigerator. I started drinking hot herb tea in the morning and at bedtime right after I detoxed myself from coffee. I sleep better and I guess I'm healthier from what I hear about the benefits of tea. I have some nice china cups that make the tea taste even better.:flowerforyou:

While I have never drank coffee (I know weird) but since I really haven't drank tea other than for crystal light reasons, please advise how this will help me otherwise...thanks cr0 -
I don't really know the exact reasons that tea, especially green tea, is good for you but it shows up in almost every article I read about eating healthy. The other thing about decaf tea and herb tea is that is good for you like drinking a lot of water but it tastes more interesting. It's harder for me to try to drink 8 glasses of water than it is to drink a lot of tea and some water. I've just started drinking hot lemon tea in the morning with my breakfast (oatmeal and fruit)0
