Where do you go to get your body fat measured? I'd love to know my percentage... but have no idea where to get that done at.

A nutritionist, doctor or dietitian can all do it. But I would ask for them to use body fat calipers and not a bio impedance tool.

Keep in mind that the number you get isn't necessarily accurate; getting an accurate measure is difficult to do and very easy to mess up.

Where I go to college all we have to do is ask the fitness instructors and they'll do it, out activity center doubles as a public gym. If you're a member at gym you could ask if they have a tool for that. If it's a scale or something you hold I wouldn't do it those are very inaccurate.

Actually, most doctors can't do body fat analysis. They will give you a BMI, which is not the same. BMI is just a height to weight ratio, which is useless for knowing if you have a lot of fat or a lot of lean body mass. You can go to the trainers at a local gym for a general measurement of body fat and they may charge or may not depending on the rules at that gym. For something more accurate, you can see a weight loss specialist or hospital to see if they offer DEXA scanning for body composition analysis. ASK about the Body Composition Analysis first because not all DEXA scans are for that or give you a percentage of body fat. (Some places only use them for bone density.) DEXA is the best for accuracy, but very expensive. A trainer with calipers or bio-electrical impedance is much cheaper but not as accurate. Another alternative is to ask your local college or university if they have an exercise science or exercise physiology department and talk to them about what they use. Our lab has a Bod Pod, but other schools have the option for hydrostatic weighing. Both are measurements of displacement, Bod Pod being air displacement and hydrostating weighing being water displacement, and are second to the DEXA for accuracy. We charge less then $50 for a Bod Pod assessment at our lab.
  • Another way to do it for an idea about your body fat composition is to use the method the US Military does to estimate body fat. They do it by taking measurements of various parts of the body and it gets an estimate of body fat. Google Body fat calculator and look for the US Navy calculator. Like I said it wont be spot on but I use it for an estimate.

Most gyms will have trainers that have the equipment on hand and will measure it for you. That is what I did.
