HRM calorie burn estimate low

Hey all,

Not sure why, but whenever I wear my HRM to track calories burned, it seems like it takes me MUCH longer to burn a decent number of calories. For example, a 45-minute Insanity workout will just about kill me, but my HRM says I've burned fewer than 300 calories. Or an hour-long session on the elliptical will burn 300 calories, when the machine estimates 500. A few guesses as to why: I have a pretty good aerobic base, so I need to step things up more to burn more. Or I need to look at the settings again on my HRM. Ahyone else know what's going on?

Much appreciated!

What kind of HRM do you have?
  • i have heard that treadmills , etc is based on some type of general formula and not a true rep as to what each person burns for each work out. a HRM is more accurate

    How tall are you?
    How much do you weigh?

I ask these things because it matters on how many cals you burn! By your pictures you seem tiny :)

I have a HRM and my cal burn is lower than I would like, but unfortunetly I am 5'3 and weigh 112lbs so my cal burn is low.
Even though I feel like I am dying and pushing myself to almost throwing up (doing Bob Harper's Ultimate Carido Body) for
an hour, I burn about 350 cals. But someone much bigger would burn much more cals!

    Hope this helps

It's a Polar, very basic. Tells me HR, percent of maximum (or the actual number), time, calorie burn, percent of those calories from fat, etc. Comes with the heart rate strap and transmitter.

Yes, I'm pretty small--5'3 and now 120 lbs (I've put on a few in the last couple months!). So maybe that has to do with it too. Kinda sucks that we have to work much harder to get a decent burn. :)
