I plan on really working HARD for the first month in the new year!!! My question is how long do you all think we should work out per day? I was thinking 80 mins per day for the first month 5-6 times per week...

3 times a week for 45 mins with weights.
3 times a week for aerobic activity...like 20-45 mins.
Push for 200 calories burned every 10 mins for aerobic activity and 100 calories burned every 20 mins with weights.
Good Luck and for gods sake please dont over train!0 -
I'd say it depends on your physical abilities and fitness level. Of course those who are more fit and used to physical exercise should work out longer and at a higher intensity than say a person who is just staring out and has never really worked out before. Here's a good article on it: http://www.answerfitness.com/47/how-often-should-i-workout-fitness-tips/0

While I agree with the schedule, isn't 200 cals for 10 minutes A LOT? I burn 200 calories by doing 30 minutes biking/running/elliptical!0 -
80 minutes a day 5 to 6 times a week, and you are going to burn out real quick.. esp if you have never exercised before.
Start slow... think 30-45 minutes and then go from there.
I have been exercising since January and the most I exercise is 45-60 minutes.. any more, and I want to shoot myself.0 -
I agree with dad106...find something you can sustain over a long period of time. I've been slacking off for a multitude of reasons, but when I'm on track I work out about 4 nights a week (average) for 30 minutes, usually a workout DVD with hand weights. It works for me and I don't feel like it's a HUGE burden to commit to it.
Once in a while I do sort of a "last chance workout" thing where I'll double it, but it's rare.0 -
I think anywhere from 30-40 minutes is ideal. I've read that anything over 45 minutes is kind of pointless. It's different for everyone, just don't rush into it or push yourself too hard in the beginning or it will be easier to quit.0

Do you have any goals beyond working out for working out sake? I rarely go beyond an hour doing anything. (unless I'm Mt Biking) I'm training for a 10 mile race, so once a week I'll do a long run, this weekend should be close to 1 hr 45 min.0 -
If you spend 80 minutes exercising, then chances are you're not working out at a very high intensity. What types of exercises are you planning on doing and what are your goals? If your goal is weight loss, then working out at a higher intensity for a shorter period of time (i.e., HIIT or resistance training) will likely be more effective than 80 minutes of endurance cardio.0

Try some TurboFire. Even if you don't do it for 20 weeks, just doing it for a few will boost your levels of fitness and hopefully your enthusiasm too :-)0

How about, as advised you take it easy instead of pushing yourself HARD and hating it after a week!
Do you plan to continue it throughout the rest of the year? if you so you need to be more realistic and achievable with your goals
Good Luck0 -
