Using protein for faster recovery between workouts

Has anyone used protein supplements to help speed up recovery time between workouts? If so - do they really work and how often do you use them - daily, 1-2 per week, 1-2 per month? I workout pretty hard - usually Tae Kwon Do (I'm a 5th dan black belt), gym (weights & cardio), bikram yoga (90 minutes stretching in a sauna), surfing and skiing. I used to be able to do multiple activities the same day and be a little sore (when I was younger). My goal is to drop about 10 pounds - not bulk up & gain huge mass. I've read various uses for protein supplements. I've had to do various physical therapy on my shoulders, back & knees the past couple years after way over doing it. My thoughts are to use protein supplements to help speed up recovery and avoid doing multiple activities on the same day, but still be able to recover in time to work out pretty intensely daily. I think I can live with skipping the gym after a day of surfing.
