BMI is useless because ……

I feel it is also necessary to continue the conversation on weight versus a tape measure by stating BMI is even more useless then weight as a measurement tool. Why? First, BMI does not differentiate between people's bone structure causing misleading results. Secondly, people who work out and gain muscle density may show up as overweight or obese even though they are in fairly great shape. As an example I have worked out with weights for a number of years and I have more muscle then most men my age, height and weight, but when my BMI is calculated it registers 25.1 or over weight. That seems very inaccurate to me because most people I know at the health club say I look exceptional for my age.

That is why I recommend and take my clients body fat percentage and tape measurements. While still not extremely accurate it is a far better measurement of your overall body composition and improvements. It is also a great tool to use for recording historical progress. You can usually find and buy an analyzer for less than $50 and how much is a cloth tape measure ladies?
