Head catching up with body

I just had a weird moment-- I was on my MFP homepage and I saw "108 lbs lost" and really thought about that. I have a very hard time realizing that I've lost ONE HUNDRED AND EIGHT pounds and that I look completely different. If I see that anyone else has lost that much, I feel so proud of them. But I can't wrap my head around the realization that I have done that, so I can't feel proud of myself usually.

I tried rereading the latest success story I posted: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/417247-over-100-lbs-lost-milestones-galore-with-pics

When I look at pictures of before and now (not after's yet), I see that they look like different people. And everyone says "Oh you must feel like a new person!" But the truth is, I don't. I feel like that same person.

Does anyone else have this problem? How do I help my mind catch up with my body?

That thought has scared me to death from the beginning, and I sure hope that those who have met and maintained their goals can offer some great advice. I see some changes in my mind, but despite my body becoming more fit over the last twelve months, I know for a fact that the insecurities and other issues that allowed me to become and stay overweight for so long are alive and well on the inside. I have learned to eat well, and have found exercises that I enjoy, and that will carry much of the burden, but I fear that any fitness achievement may be vulnerable until I've successfully identified and addressed some of the emotional (self-image) issues as well.

ETA after seeing next post: When people ask how much I weigh, I still start with something like "Two-eighty, wait, two-si," before having to reconcile my mouth, my head, and my body to where I'm at now (213).

My boss recently lost litterally half of herself, but still walks into a store and goes in the plus size section. She says she still see herself as and overweight person. Eventhough she weighs 110 lbs and wears a 2 and sometimes those are big.

Give it time it'll catch up

I do this sometimes, too. I almost walked into Lane Bryant the other day because I'd gotten so used to having to shop there.

I have a hard time with this as well - I still feel like the same person for the most part.

What about trying some affirmations, if you're into that sort of thing. It could be a way for you to practice new thoughts until they naturally become your thoughts and not so awkward. Like maybe, "I am fit and healthy" or "I enjoy my trim, light body" or "My fit body helps me enjoy a full rich life." I dunno... it's just an idea! :)

But I know what you mean because although I haven't lost as much as you, my current weight keeps becoming my new "before" in my head. I might practice this thought: I love knowing how to nourish and train my body.

This might be a great idea. I made an mp3 of exercise affirmations to listen to and repeat while exercising early on in my efforts. Maybe it's time to update to something a little more appropriate for the current phase.
