Hi guys- so I'm noticing that when working out at the gym my quads get a killer workout from walking on the treadmill, elliptical, and cycling - even on all the weight machines too.

But any suggestions for calves as well?

    Performing the standing calf raise
Follow these steps to perform this exercise:

Stand on the edge of a step.

Or, if you have a step-aerobics platform, place two sets of risers underneath the platform.

Stand tall with your abdominals pulled in, the balls of your feet firmly planted on the step, and your heels hanging over the edge.

Rest your hands against a wall or a sturdy object for balance.

Raise your heels a few inches above the edge of the step so that you’re on your tiptoes.

Hold the position for a moment, and then lower your heels below the platform, feeling a stretch in your calf muscles.

I second what he says.. they are killer for calves.

Even just doing a leg press will target you're calves since your using the whole leg to push.

It's kind of hard to get your heartbeat up doing calf exercises since they are such a small muscle.
  • Put your treadmill on a large incline so and run on your toes. Use the stairs but don't allow the heel of your foot to hit the floor. Box jumps are great as well.

Skipping! Good for getting the heart rate up if you can go fast enough, less impact than running and as you are on the balls of your feet it's a great workout for the calves.

Running, cycling and any jumping movements, think Plyometrics, also work wonders.
