I don't eat my exercise calories back as I had over 100# to lose. If I'm really hungry after a particularly rigorous workout, I'll eat a reasonable snack 50-150 calories, but nothing near the entire amount. Although I'm down 50#, I don't think I have enough lean muscle to worry about and still lots of that nasty old fat so until I get closer to my goal, I won't be eating back my exercise calories. I'm losing 1.5-2.0 lbs a week which has me very happy, I have lots of energy and my Doctor is monitoring my progress and nutrition. Her advice was not to eat back my exercise calories except for a small snack if I need it. Her biggest concern is making sure I eat my regular daily amount...who would have thought that would be an issue???

im ready to try something else.. Also what should my net calories be at the end of the day for success?
My daily calorie goal is 1290 and i always meet that and I burn over 500 calories a day with exercise but im stuck and getting frustraded.
I have consulted with a doctor who specializes in weight management and obesity and she tells me that it defeats the purpose of burning those calories exercising to then eat them back.
If this doctor is suggesting you only eating 1200 and burn 500, is the same as eating 700 and not exercising, then get a second opinion. 700 is not enough for anyone, and you will lose a lot of lean muscle mass if you don't eat them back.
The reason most doctors tell you not to eat them is that a caloric intake goal they give you takes into account exercise. So where MFP will give you 1200 and tell you to eat your exercise calories, the doctor would be more likely to give you 1400-1500, knowing you plan on exercising 5 days/week. your weekly caloric intake would be about the same doing 1200+ exercise or 1400 everyday.0 -

Since you don't have a lot of muscle it is even more important for you to eat enough, as you don't want to lose what you do have. losing muscle lowers your metabolism and at your goal weight you will be skinny fat (thin with a high BF%).0 -

Exactly!! This method totally depends on what your calorie intake is otherwise. Case in point - I know I burn on average 2400 calories a day when I exercise. If I only eat 1200 calories (MFP recommendation based on light activity) and don't eat my exercise calories, that gives me a 1200 calorie deficit, which is not good for me especially since I only need to lose 30 lbs. Currently my BMR is 1440, so that is the minimum I eat, plus at least half of my exercise calories, which gets me closer to a 700-800 calorie deficit.0 -
I eat back at least most of mine, but just focus on my daily/weekly deficit. Try just eating back half for now and see how you do.0

It depends on when I worked out. During the week, I have to go in the evenings, so I generally will just have a piece of string cheese after. So I'm definitely not eating anywhere near all of the exercise calories earned.
But on the weekends, I usually workout early in the morning, so I do tend to eat almost all of them by the end of the day.
Granted I'm only in my 4th week, but I've lost 8 lbs already.0 -
No, I didn't use MFP to determine my BMR first of all. Mine is around 2,750 to lose about a 1 lb a week so my burns of between 600-900 calories a day are putting me between 1,800 and 2,000 net.0

thats what i was thinking..0

I usually ate my exercise calories back and it seemed to work pretty well. I did have a few weeks now and then when I was stuck but that would always pass eventually and I would be back to losing the weight.0
-
I usually do, depends on how hungry I am. I try to make sure that I'm over 1250 net for the day though.0

Some days I eat my exercise calories, some days I don't. I've lost steadily since July. I'm 2 pounds from my goal. You have to find what works for you. Just don't give up!0

I've only been eating about 1/2 of mine back...and not seeing results....but part of that is that I eat them at like 8pm....maybe I should start eating them before I work out??? that seems backwards, but it would be worth a try i guess....
I eat my dinner most days at 8/9 pm after I exercise.... so it really doesn't matter0 -
From what people have been telling me, I have had some success, and I usually do eat them back. Every so often I don't feel like it or I'm not hungry, but the majority of the time I eat them back and I have been losing slowly and consistently (which is my goal of how I want to lose, but it may not be your goal.) FWIW.0

I'm new (a little over a week of tracking now), but I've been eating my exercise calories back and I have lost a couple of pounds. I think maybe the goal is a little low for me. I indicated in the settings that I want to lose 1lb per week.
Sometimes in the beginning you drop some water weight. Not sure of your exact circumstances, but this comes up a lot in the threads about the quick loss in the beginning. Also the activity level you set is basically a best guess, so it may be just slightly off from reality.
Did a BodPod test last week and it came back with 13.3% body fat. I figured if I got a little pickier about what I ate that I could get it down to 10 or 11% without too much trouble. Searched for "food diary" in the Android marketplace, and here I am.0 -
. I had remarkable success very early on, and was dropping weight like crazy, which was very motivating to me. Then it backfired on me. My hair started falling out in huge chunks and my skin was flaking off. I was weak and lethargic...but not really hungry.
This is a quote above from a mom of five kids...
This spring i went too low too and dropped weight FAST. The skin on my feet started to go rogue on me and i felt TERRIBLE. I was tired and shakey.
Unlike her, I was hungry and thought it was just how it had to be. And I got HANGRY (it's a hungry/angry thing).
My weight lifting started to suffer- i could not figure out why I could not pull as much weight and why my reps were falling.
I upped my calories. I eat a portion of my exercise calories back. It really works for me. Not only am I more fun to be around but i started making strength and endurance gains again because I am fueling this furnace.0 -
I have my exercise included in my tdee so i dont eat them back. If i set my life to sedentary, i would. I also jave maintained 100% of my lean muscle mass in the 20 lbs lose and 6% body fat.0
