Christmas Meal Strategy

So I've counted calories many times for the past 4 years or so but find I get frustrated and quit after a bad day. Im not cooking, and in fact Im bringing terribly high calorie dessert. But this time Im going to plan for the day, and Im going to win.

My strategy is to eat smart portions but not give up the things I enjoy for the holiday like mashed potatoes. Im not going to count calories at all, and while this may sound like a bad idea, I think itll work ok. Moderate/small portions, no second helpings. Plus, its hard to get a good calorie count on homemade foods made by someone else in my experience.

One day isnt going to ruin a calorie count, and its a good exercise in self control.

How are you planning the day's food?

I survey everything on the table before I decide what to put on my plate. I can have mashed potatoes any time, so I won't take any. I figure out which dessert I want and take a small piece. If I can't make up my mind between two, then I'll just take a smaller piece of each. I've gotten to the point where I can't look at anything without thinking about how many calories are in it. Kinda takes the fun out of eating! At Thanksgiving I filled about half my plate with green beans so I wouldn't have room for a lot of the other food, and I didn't go back for seconds.

It's not the meal itself that concerns me, or even the dessert (red velvet cake).....it's all the goodies that will be out all weekend, Just sitting there on plates saying pick me up eat me, just one won't hurt....so tempting.

Im fortunate that this wont be an issue for me. This would be a real challenge.

Count me in this boat! Survey the food, then decide what's really worth it. I'm personally making calorie bomb of a casserole to take my mom's for brunch on Christmas Eve, but I plan on passing it up for other homemade treats!

I'm going for tiny portions, and I'll take a LONG time to eat them. I don't think people will push food on your plate as long as there's something there... Right?

But if there's bread... I might be screwed =)
