When you started jogging on treadmills...

How fast were you going? And on what incline?

I am 5ft1 with stubby little fat legs. Walking (uncomfortably) is about a 2.8, 2.6 if I'm catching my breath. I can job at 3.2 (on a 2 incline).

I know I have to start somewhere, but it would be nice to hear of someone else starting where I am?

  • I'm 5'2 with short legs too. I have the incline at 1%. Rignt now I jog at 5mph and walk at 3.5. Just starting out i think i was walking at about 3 mph and jogging (or my version of it) at about 4.5mph

im 5 4" and i have short legs for my body, i started walking at 3 and jogging at 4, that was about two months ago ( i was not much of a walker/runner when i was at 230 lbs)

Since then i've now blown it out of the park, i dont use the treadmill anymore, I jog outside, doing 5km in around 30minutes. and 10k in just over an hour. You gotta start somewhere!
  • I'm tall (5'7"), and have thunder thighs and huge hips, so my legs don't move very quickly. I started walking at 3.2, and jogging at 4.0. Now I briskly walk at 3.8 and jog comfortably at 4.5. These are the varying speeds I do my 5k training on, unless I'm completely winded, in which case I'll walk at 3.5 to catch my breath and if I'm feeling ballsy or a really good song is on, I'll sprint at 5.0. MFP makes me feel badly though, because according to it, 4.5 is "very brisk walk". No way.

I'm 5'3", and 36 pounds ago I would start my walk at 2.5 mph. Now I start at 3.7 - 4 mph and can jog/run comfortably at 5 mph.

Be patient, and over time, you'll be amazed at how your body will rise to the challenge.

    Best wishes!

    Hello there!

I'm 5'1" and I started walking quickly at 3.0 and a light jog at 4.0. Now I walk at 3.5 and jog/run anywhere between 4.5 and 5.5!! Just take your time, and it gets easier!!

    Have fun!
  • I'm 5'81/2 with long legs (32" inseam) and really your legs have nothing to do with it. I started out similar to you but with no incline. I was soooo slow when I started couch to 5k. I think I was doing 2.5-2.8 rest and 3.2 jogging. No incline. I didn't know about the treadmill is actually like running downhill thing until I started jogging outdoors. I am still pretty slow but now after a year of jogging I can manage a sub 1 hour 10k on flats outdoors.

When I use my treadmill I set the incline at 3% as the minimum but I run outside more these days.

Best thing to do in slowly increase the incline or the speed each week, I would alternate between a speed increase and then the next week increase the incline.

Also C25K (couch to 5k) is a pretty good program for beginners

I'm 5'4" and have really short legs ( I seriously have like a 27" or 28" inseam). lol.

My job requires me to be on my feet, so I started off a little faster since my body was used to walking.

I started off walking around 3.2. I have to start jogging around 4.2 or 4.3 and am running by the time I hit 5.0.

I can't run on an incline - it puts too much pressure on my back (I have steel rods and a bulging disc)

I really don't agree that your legs don't have anything to do with it. Like I said, my legs are short. Even at my peak of weight loss and before I hurt my back -- I couldn't run at anything higher than a 6.0. My legs simply can NOT keep up with the pace. I wasn't winded or anything - my legs were just too stubby to keep up. My boyfriend's not much taller than I am - but his legs are quite a bit longer and he can easily run at a higher pace.

Considering you have very long legs, I'm not sure how you're in a position to say that our leg length doesn't matter. You're quite tall compared to all of us. How would you know how short legs respond to running?

I was thinking the same thing!
