Does anyone else HATE this? "Oh, you don't need to lose weight, you're so pretty".....

So, a Little Rant. My parents asked what I want from them, and I told them I wanted a month membership to the local gym so I can try them out. They were SO Kind, game me the membership, as well as a few other things to help me out with my weight loss....
Everyone in my family was really supportive, except my Grandma. She would NOT STOP Going on about how I don not need to lose weight for anyone, and that I am just beautiful the way I am. I know she was being a grandma and just being nice, but it got old. I thanked her the first few times, but Eventyally I just had to tell her to stop. "I Know I'm hot , I got that. I just want to be healthier!"

I a lost feel like this is as bad as people telling you that you need to lose weight! At least people calling me a fatty aren't trying to boost my ege and give me a false perception of myself.

It's like "Look, I want to do this for me, no one else. Leave me alone, let me get myself together."

/end rant

Yes. This is PRECISELY why I never discuss my weight loss plans.

You get that, and then also people feel the need to police and comment on what you eat.

Yes. I get that a lot from church ladies. They are sincere when they say it and I do believe do it to make me feel good about myself. But then when I mention I want a baby they will say, Yes, then you do need to lose some weight. Some are very supportive but latley I have just quit telling anyone I am trying to lose weight and am going to do this on the sly and see if anyone notices. I don't want all of the attention and telling me how to what to do, because you know, everyone and their mothers know how to lose weight but me. :indifferent:

BTW, great job with the parents!! That is great they support you and a great gift!!

By the way, you DO look very pretty and I wish you luck with your goal to get healthier. Grandma just wants to give you a self esteem boost, I think it shows she cares about your mental health :)

I think it depends on the motive. Seems like grandma doesn't really mean any harm, but you can explain to her about why you don't want her to say something like that.

My boyfriend acts like that. He tells me how I don't need to lose weight and how he loves me for the way I am. Luckily he says that he'll still support my weight-loss journey. :) He talks about how he'll miss touching my tummy all the time.

My family and friends were like that too, they want to be supportive of you as a person, yet they don't realize that they're doing it in the wrong way. I had an aunt, on the other hand, who always let me know what was up. Every time I would return home and visit I'd hear "You sure have gotten FAT haven't you?" Even when I'd lost weight.

I've not gotten that I don't need to lose weight but I have gotten that I don't need to lose much more weight. I'm 170 and at 5'3, I need to lose about 30 more pounds to be average weight, but 50 for my goal. My uncle told me that I was melting away and if I keep going there would be nothing left of me. I see change but I don't think I'm melting away lol. I don't discuss it with family or friends anymore, I only talk about it on here, if someone asks me about it I'll talk but I won't talk about it, people who aren't losing weight don't understand it and people who aren't trying to live healthier won't get it.

They are likely being sincere and not intending to be hurtful so maybe just a "Thank you but I hope to feel and look even better" will suffice.
That is something any person should understand as long as everything is within healthy ranges.
  • YES. I hate when people do that. My family isn't supportive of anything I do, so I don't talk about it. I understand that many people think that if you're trying to lose weight, it means you feel insecure about yourself, or not good enough, etc., but that isn't always the case.

I just had to use the dr excuse."My dr is yelling about my weight" and it shuts em right up. they care but part of it is they dont do anything about their health and this is not only about what i look like to me. i want to see grandkids someday!

i say "thanks" and start thinking about my next work out. most people that say something like that its because they feel ashamed that they don't have the same motivation.

my boyfriend always says this to me, but he's still supportive in my endeavors. i know he'll love me no matter what and i know he'll also support me in anything i want to do.

my problem is that i have such low self esteem that when he tells me i'm beautiful/sexy/etc, all i can think about is all the things that are "wrong" with me. i can never just take a compliment...
